Crypto vs. stocks Most crypto has no intrinsic value. It has no real reason to grow over the long term. Stocks, on the other hand, represent parts of companies that create some value over the long term (usually). As companies grow and their value grows, the stock price grows as well. Therefore, over the long term, holding the stock as a whole in the form of some index makes sense. Finding true value in most crypto projects is nearly impossible. The search for such value is then reflected in the price of the crypto as a whole. There are certainly exceptions. But these prove the rule. Take a look at the index created from the Binance spot market. It represents all the coins that have been or are traded there. Since Aug 17, 2017, its price has risen by only 59% as of Sep 30, 2023. In doing so, you would have to overcome declines of more than 90%. Meanwhile, SPY as a representative of the 500 largest US companies has done 69%. With significantly less volatility and declines. The huge advantage of crypto is its volatility. That's what makes it interesting to trade. But buying individual coins to hold for the long term is statically pointless...
