Hi. My name is Halli. I'm the founder and CEO of Ueno. First of all, I want to say yes, @uenodotco is back. I'm kind of surprised myself. I wasn't really planning on it. I started Ueno in my apartment in Reykjavík, Iceland in 2014. And seven years later I sold it to Twitter for a lot of money. But it wasn't the money. That's maybe hard to believe but that wasn't the reason. Business was great, I didn't need money. I needed a new challenge. Ueno had grown over those seven years to multiple offices and over 100 people. We were working with the biggest brands in the world on some really exciting projects. But still, I felt like something was missing. I had been on the outside for a long time, working for companies to make something and then we’d hand it off to them to nurture and grow it. I wanted to be on the inside of a big company and see things through, to see them grow. I wanted a challenge and the biggest one I could find was Twitter. To help people make better connections, to find their communities, engage more earnestly. Things didn't turn out like I expected. But in hindsight that's not really what matters. We did some great work and I learned more than I could have imagined. About corporate ups and downs, and about my own ups and downs. I saw things you wouldn’t believe. And then suddenly I was free and I went and made some other things. I built a lot of wheelchair ramps, I built a restaurant and movie theater, a bank, a recording studio, a community for creative people. I started a podcast, released a visual album, acted in some movies. I did everything I always wanted to do. And it was great. But after four years away from Ueno it kept picking at me. This little itch. The feeling I get when someone comes with something that's just an idea and they want our help to see it become real. It feels like magic. Like alchemy. I missed that feeling. And so, yes, Ueno is back. Blammo!

Announcing a new agency from Barrel Holdings (sort of)... From 2012 to 2022, designer & entrepreneur @danmall ran SuperFriendly, a unique agency that worked with the world’s best companies to help them leverage design systems and create innovative products. After a decade-long run, Dan decided to close down SuperFriendly to pursue his passion for teaching others. He launched Design System University, teaching thousands of designers and hundreds of orgs how to design at scale. Dan and I connected last year and batted around the idea of a reboot for SuperFriendly. We both felt that with the right leadership and approach, an updated SuperFriendly could flourish. Dan, focused on his other entrepreneurial pursuits, made it clear that he wouldn’t want to be operationally involved but would be happy to support the re-boot as a board member and shareholder. I met Jon Sukarangsan via LinkedIn in 2023. He had recently left his agency role and was consulting various companies. I was immediately impressed with Jon’s thoughtfulness and strategic thinking. Barrel engaged Jon to work with us on some positioning and service design thinking. We continued to stay in touch and when the SuperFriendly opportunity came up, I approached Jon with the possibility of becoming the CEO. Having overseen large scale product and design system work at the enterprise level, Jon was no stranger to the work SuperFriendly had made its name doing. With Dan’s blessing, we got Jon on board and the SuperFriendly reboot became real. I’ve shared about how Barrel Holdings is growing our portfolio through agency launches and acquisitions. Well, SuperFriendly occupies a space somewhere in the middle. There is an M&A element in that we’ve acquired the trademarks and related assets. But it’s also a brand new agency starting from a clean slate: new leadership, new clients, new processes, and new team. SuperFriendly is an important addition to the Barrel Holdings portfolio. We’ve seen the need for more sophisticated design consulting, especially at the mid-market and enterprise levels. SuperFriendly’s design system focus and product design capabilities will be attractive offerings to in-house design and product teams in need of fresh perspectives & hands-on support. We’re really excited for this model and thrilled to be partnered with Dan and Jon.
