ever wonder why Iniesta was such an effective ball-carrier? the secret is in the upper-sidefoot contact he made with the ball consistently.

Barca's defenders reorient their feet/posture to maintain the line which will often "lock" their body/feet to a certain side/direction (at times even flat and not side-on). runs from deep + receiving to-feet gives attack forward momentum that Barca can't individually cope with.

playing to feet requires more dynamic carrying from deep, which is a less available profile than runs in-depth, so understandable that it's not as common as a solution. but you can effectively cancel out all the advantages of Flick's offside-line by playing to-feet more.

not sure if intentional by Almeyda, Sevilla had interesting solution vs Flick's offside-line. more passes to-feet with deep runs + running momentum. less distance on the final pass to break the offside-line. encourages low-to-high movement + uses momentum to exploit offside.

@FPL_Fullhouse @PittsFCB dude😂 best of luck as well, please try to not patronize others like you just did, it doesn't cost much to be kind.

if Slot's vision for Wirtz is built on the premise: "more freedom = better use", than that's a disastrous evaluation of Wirtz as a player. Wirtz needs specific distances/references, but with freedom to choose what to do, that's where his IQ shines. not "running around".

@Lehlogonoloser9 absolutely, shame about the price though, was never even remotely close to 60M, and doesn't fit the squad anyway. horrific recruitment.

@thewittyjack Slightly more nimble Xhaka. Still very much redeemable in the right environment

textbook case of player failing because he tries what he's not good at + doesn't stick to what he's good at. a wall-pass, 1-2 touch passer who should never, ever take 3+ touches, never have to turn, long passing/ball-striking + late runs to box. stick to your guns, players.

@FPL_Fullhouse @PittsFCB how would you know that i don't? your comment is as speculative as you assume mine is, is that not ironic to you?

@PittsFCB @thewittyjack Sure. But our friend Kannan doesnt have all the variables (in person, visual), all the myriad of other dynamics at play, the data, or knowledge that Slot does. So can we not throw things out there like it means something when infact we arent positioned to comment meaningfully?

if Wirtz was at City/Barca/Bayern, we'd be speaking very differently about him.

you need to play Wirtz where Pep plays Foden. Wirtz is a less-powerful, higher IQ, better passer version of what Pep imagined Foden will grow into.

@MinimumWidth that could legitimately be the case, i never assume that players "know what's best for them", and to be honest, i think it's a silly thing to think. perhaps Wirtz really did believe Slot's vision.

People just believed a random tweet saying Slot had a better plan for Wirtz than what Kompany presented and that’s why he won him over, LOL.

of course other variables were/are at play, the contrasting shifts in style (and consequently fitness levels), price-tag, and partnerships/dynamics with the squad. but he can and should be much better, and he would be if he stuck to what he's good at. x.com/MichaelOnSport…

I asked Shai Gilgeous-Alexander about playing with Nikola Topić. “He just understands how to play basketball. If I had to sum it up in one sentence. He sees the game, he’s poised, he has size, he’s strong, and he doesn’t step out of I guess what he knows he can do.”

stories like Mjallby, Bodo Glimt and the likes should be the norm, not the exception. leading with domain-specific competence and you can turn things around very, very quickly.

i wholeheartedly believe 99% of professional football clubs in the world are actually significantly underperforming. you don't need a huge budget relative to size to perform at an elite level. know-how and alignment is remarkably scarce in football, and easily solvable.

it's poor body orientation and poor execution of "show-weak-foot". you have to ensure you're *square-and-low* to the diagonal dribbler because he'll always try yo attack your top leg (closest knee/hip to him), which forces your midsection to rotate completely to keep up.

That assist from Olise epitomises why it’s important to have a range of technical solutions in your toolbox, because it completely disguises your threat. He dribbles in an angle that seems manageable for the defender, but finds unpredictability through using his out-step. Top.

@thewittyjack Twist vs no twist, as you said, let me get it and I’ll figure it out later vs Lamine knowing what he has to do before receiving it. (not the best context-examples in clips, but close to what I want to say)

a key difference between a Yamal and a Rashford is pre-seperation. seperation from standstill is good for getting shots/passes/crosses off quickly, but it doesn't generate enough momentum to slalom/rhythm-carry, so if you don't execute, you get trapped.

@RobyPoto yes! a significant part of that is prep pre-reception, Rashford likely doesn't collect info 1st > decide > act, it's act (receive) > collect info > decide > act. thus, no momentum.

I saw it too in receiving stances, no? Rashford seems to be half-turned when receiving the ball so when he stops it he doesn’t have back-leg momentum, however Lamine receives it by twisting his body already in motion, having momentum and inertia to have an acceleration that can change trajectory. Lamine always seems to be twisting in rhythm with the ball when receiving, especially in wider areas with more time & space, when Rashford is already in the position of Lamine’s final twist.
