Article 5 of the MoU begins with safe passage, no matter the more problematic language about the future administration of the Strait with Oman (which still must be subject to international law and rights of all coastal states). But rather than shoot at ships they could have pressed for implementation of article 12, namely, an executive mechanism to monitor deal implementation and raised this matter. Instead they looked at a president who was willing to suspend oil sanctions and allow dollar repatriation, and said “nah, let’s roll the dice against this guy.”

@posta_octavian yeah, agreed, none of these small things matter at the end when you need to deal with higher energy prices than the rest of the world, bearing the burden of climate change solely when nobody else gives a damn, shortage of housing, wars, tech, R&D. it's sad when I think about it.

One of my biggest problems with the EU is that they standardise a lot of things that don't matter. In the US, every state has their own unique license plates. In the EU, we more or less all have the same style. With bank notes, they could give every eurozone country the opportunity to print their own notes with their own figures or symbols. Instead they standardise. On the other hand I'd love a common European army, common European legal structure for investments, fewer internal barriers. Things that matter. This kind of tendency by the commission to standardise just because they can to show "hey guys we're unifying Europe" or to flex their power should stop. If euro bank notes were individualised there may be less opposition to joining the eurozone in countries like Denmark, Czechia and Poland.
