As an American who watches soccer once every four years - I have never understood stoppage time. Why does the timekeeper get carte blanche on adding extra time and how come we don’t know exactly when the half will end? It feels so arbitrary and intentionally opaque

All I keep seeing on my timeline is English and Americans arguing. Just to clarify a few things… 1 - America is a great place to visit, it has almost everything. 2 - Americans are friendly, some of the nicest people you’ll meet. 3 - Not all Americans are fat, it’s a myth. Go to Miami and you’ll see hardly any! 4 - Americans aren’t rude, they can be abrupt at times but rarely rude. 5 - The stadiums are incredible there but we in Europe prefer more raw, less flat pack types of stadiums. Both can be impressive! 6 - USA have a half decent team and a solid manager, it’s better for the tournament if they progress but as soon as they come up against an elite side I do expect them to falter. My main point is this…. The angry tribe on X is not the average American who tend to be warm, engaging and have a like for the English. Don’t fall into the hatred of social media. Just enjoy the World Cup if you can. #worldcup #england #USA_Paraguay

This take is not only uneducated but also false. More kids and high schoolers play soccer than baseball and hockey BY FAR in America.

@hollsburner4 @JonathanForwar6 @starsnstripesfc Soccer/football seasons usually overlap (did where i grew up) and football is just much bigger in most high schools. Until that changes, more of the best athletes will pick football. Fact. Less every year, though, from what I can gather.

@starsnstripesfc People are missing the point. I’m taking the halfway approach in that the US would be a lot better overall if we didn’t spread our best athletes out among as many major sports - but not saying we’d necessarily dominate or anything, that’s silly. Top 5 regulars, IMO.

@starsnstripesfc Well, I’m not saying that. I am saying that we have a lot of terrific athletes who would have had the potential to be great soccer players given the training & time commitment. And our national team would be much better as a result, almost certainly.
