Lost in translation: How Russia’s new elite hit squad was compromised by an idiotic lapse in tradecraft
@christogrozev, @Dobrokhotov and @michaeldweiss detail how hubris and Google Translate exposed Russia's most secretive assassination unit, Center 795.

@icelandcricket Is it true that Icelanders referred to the period as the “Lovely War”?!
English

In 1940, we were invaded by the British. We taught them the value of eating high-quality cod and we learned what vinegar is. Our population grew mysteriously.
Two cricket matches were played on a Reykjavík airfield in 1944 between the Royal Navy and Airforce.

The last time each European country was invaded
English

@KettlebellYard @amazingmap Yes, the map doesn’t show successful invasions, but any invasions. So the last one in the UK would probably be 1797.

Very important tone of the Statements made by Armenia's Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, in Tbilisi.
He underlined the importance of Georgia and Armenia's common movement towards the EU, and he stressed the need for "independent foreign policy." NONE of this corresponds to Georgia's current direction.
Pashinyan looked like a real leader, and his counterpart like a total nobody (as he is).

I've been working on this for ages in various countries: the story of the intelligence buildup to Putin's 2022 invasion. How did the US and Britain find out so much, and why were Europe and Ukraine sceptical.
It's a long one:

Important demonstration of UK support with the Defence Secretary announcing half a billion pounds of support to 🇺🇦 air defences. All the more important after last night’s Russian air strikes which left another 3000 households without heating and killed at least two people 🇺🇦🇬🇧
John Healey@JohnHealey_MP
Britain is providing an extra half a billion pounds in urgent air defence to Ukraine and will play a central part in NATO’s Arctic security mission. This is how we are stepping up in this new era of threat and hard power 👇

@NoContextBrits Why, let the stricken deer go weep
And hart ungalled play
For some must watch while some must sleep
So runs the world away.

@AntonyFiery @jason_pontin @TheLincoln No! I loved Stoner, just loved it, so much more relatable than Updike or Bellow…
English

@jason_pontin @TheLincoln I’m must be dreaming - somebody on Twitter is praising Updike and Bellow. You do bring up a curious point - you’d think fans of Stoner would also be fans of the other great authors of the time too.

@GkbWeber @BenWallace70 Always?! Such as before the Russians invaded in the 18th century?!
English

@BenWallace70 There has always been a Russian majority in Crimea. They have a right to self-determination if Ukraine becomes ultra-nationalist. It seems as if you have no idea about international law.

@OedipasKvass @damiankelleher Also, because you can soon go to watch the film ‘One Battle After Another’ with Vineland fresh in your mind…
English

@damiankelleher Vineland. Not my favorite Pynchon but definitely the most underrated Pynchon.

@DrDavidVernon So, ahem, imagine someone who has never read a Japanese book (😱) but is otherwise an avid reader, lover of Nabokov etc, about to go to Japan for the first time. Where would you advise them to start? Asking for a friend…
