ATR is one of the most powerful indicators I have ever used in my hedge fund. Here is how I actually apply it. Most traders use ATR as a trailing stop or a volatility filter. That is one job for a tool that can do three. In our strategies, ATR does the heavy lifting at the entry itself. The concept: take a point of initiation - a moving average, a median price line, anything defined then add a multiple of ATR above or below it. That boundary is your breakout level. If price breaks through, you have a signal. I tested Moving Average 20 as the base with ATR period 40, multiplier 2 on NASDAQ 60-minute bars. The model produced a 68% robustness score without a single additional filter. The three ATR periods I keep coming back to: 5, 20, and 40. Period 5 reacts fast, a lot of noise but early signals. Period 40 is smooth - fewer signals, better quality. Period 20 sits in between. Moving Average period 20 consistently came back as the most robust point of initiation across our tests. I build foundational breakout models in minutes using this structure. Then I add a volatility comparison filter, also based on ATR and the strategy starts to get serious. One indicator. One moving average. 68% robustness from scratch.
