Josh Owens made his 2026 debut last night in a game with the team’s complex league squad. Owens pitched 2 scoreless innings where he allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, and struck out 1 on 18 pitches. It’s great to see Owens back on the mound and ramping up his workload. The biggest thing that stands out to me from last night is the velocity. In his few starts last year there would be multiple instances where Owens would start the game hitting 96 on his fastball, but would settle in more at the 93-94 range in his 2nd inning. It was a small sample size last night, but averaging 96.4 on 17 fastballs thrown is very promising to me. Owens throws from an absurd 4.5’ release height which helps him get outlier approach angle traits on his fastball. He also has a really impressive slider shape that gets a really good amount of sweep. That’s another pitch that I will wait and see about because he sat in the low 80s with his slider last season, but the singular slider he threw yesterday was at 84.7. He’s an incredible athlete on the mound, has a deceptive delivery, and has a really strong feel for the strike zone. I’m very excited to see Owens growth as the season continues.

If the season continues this way, I’d be shocked if they blew it up. They are 2G out in the division and 1G out of a playoff spot with the second oldest team in all of baseball. I don’t think the future is their mindset at the moment. Maybe it should be, but I’m skeptical.

Not on the table. They're a game out of first and currently holding down a Wild Card spot. The AL is a mess right now -- only two teams above the hover line (NYY and TB).
