Ludicrous doublespeak to say ‘respecting intellectual property rights and supporting creators’ when the policy literally says they believe using creators’ life work without permission is fair use (contrary to the opinion of the US Copyright Office)

The grok answer addresses your question about public licenses. I'd like to emphasise that the photographs that we purchase are essential to generate high quality artistic images. Now more than ever, photographers can profit by selling their images to companies like ours or many startups.

@Travelista007 “Why is tech going after creatives, instead of solving real problems for humanity?“ Because rich and powerful as they are, nestled in all their fears about mortality, some part of them knows still creatives hold the power to tell the stories and truths that resound beyond death.

Why are companies so dead set on killing the creative class? focus on finance? healthcare? improving the lives of the vast population, not just the lives of marketing people
Grant Lee@thisisgrantlee

There's a hidden tax on every knowledge worker in the world, and nobody talks about it: The design tax. You're a strategist, a sales lead, a marketer. You were hired for what you know. But every meeting, every pitch, every proposal expects you to show up with something that looks like a designer made it. I lived this. Before Gamma, I spent time in consulting and investment banking. I spent more hours formatting slides than the analysis that went into them. When my cofounders and I started Gamma, we asked: what if you never had to be a designer in the first place? Five years and nearly 100 million users later, we've refunded billions of hours of the design tax. Today, we're eliminating it for good with our biggest launch ever. Gamma Imagine — a powerful, AI-native visual creation tool directly in Gamma. Posters, logos, infographics, visuals from a single prompt. On brand, every time. AI-Native Templates. Templates were supposed to save you from design work. Instead you spent the time filling them in. So we completely rebuilt the template experience. Modify a whole deck with a single prompt, with your brand and style intact every time. Gamma Connectors. You're already thinking in ChatGPT and Claude. Now Gamma sits inside the most popular work apps in the world. No more context-switching. You were hired for your ideas, not to resize text boxes. Let Gamma pay the design tax.

@ednewtonrex Given how hard it is for *pertinent* information to gain traction, this is surely intentional. Same pattern as Starmer backtracking on unworkable immigration reforms that also followed the same kind of forgone conclusion style consultation full of leading questions.

There’s misleading info circulating about yesterday’s UK government update on AI & copyright. It’s good but not great. Good: gov no longer officially supports a copyright exception with creatives having to opt out Bad: changing copyright law is still on the table More detail:

You do have to worry how much of this forever war of the UK government glibly pondering the size of bribe to *erode people’s basic rights to their own work* before the victims lose interest in asking how to convince these people to stop and start asking how to stop these people.
Ed Newton-Rex@ednewtonrex

The UK government released its progress report on AI & copyright today. The good news for creatives is that the government formally dropped its preferred option of a broad copyright exception with an opt-out. This was unworkable and hugely unpopular. It's good that they've recognised this. The bad news is that weakening copyright law is very much still on the table. They haven't actually ruled out that hugely unpopular opt-out proposal, and they are explicit that they are still considering other forms of copyright exception too. We are obviously in a better position than we were eighteen months ago, when the government was clearly in the pocket of big tech and was actively proposing an extremely harmful policy. Credit should go to the many, many creatives who fought that proposal, and to the new leadership at DSIT for listening. But it's important not to see this as more of a win than it really is. The government is still considering weakening copyright law to favour AI companies, and those AI companies will continue to lobby very hard for them to do so. Until the government rules out weakening copyright law, people need to keep making their voices heard. Our work is not the government's to give away. Speaking up works.
