Being a good, even GREAT software engineer doesn't make you automatically a good community leader.

@lukasz_bialy What do you think is the reason #1 why libraries/frameworks are not updated? The macro system? One of the arguments why it wouldn't be a Python-scenario was that Scala is statically typed, but I guess that didn't help with macros?

@lukasz_bialy Language breakage. I have started using Scala again after a few years and found that the ecosystem is still lagging in the update from 2 to 3 😕

Scala folks, I've been wondering - what are the biggest issues and hindrances with modernisation and maintenance of existing Scala apps? I mean things that have historically caused you the most pain in long term care over an existing codebase in Scala. My personal bet is that it's Spark because how far behind it is in terms of language versions and the write-once, care-never-if-it-runs approach to Spark pipelines but I'm happy to find out if I'm wrong. Beneath is a poll with few predefined options: 1) spark being behind modern Scala versions, also job abandonware status 2) breakage introduced by Scala language proper (2.13 collections, 2->3 migration) 3) ecosystem fragmentation and resulting lack of maintenance or breakage 4) abuse of abstraction for abstraction's sake If there's nothing in it that fits your experience - leave a comment. Please retweet!

If aerospace engineers responded to pressure the same way software engineers do, planes would be made out of tinfoil to save costs and accelerate production. Oh wait, I forgot about Boeing. 😆
Jules Ivanic@guizmaii

My dear Developers, My dear Software Engineers, It's part of your job to explain to the business/product/company that making the new feature takes time. It's part of your job to explain that you must apply some code quality and software engineering best practices (writing tests, etc.) If you don't, if you accept the pressure you can receive from them to deliver as quickly as possible and deliver a piece of software that is impossible to maintain because you bypassed all the best practices (no tests, etc.), THAT IS YOUR FAULT! It's not the fault of the business/product/company. And once the unmaintainable software costs so much to barely be maintainable and barely evolveable, once everyone is too scared to touch it, once the complexity is so big that each time you make a change you introduce a bug in prod, they will blame YOU! And they will be right! That's part of their job to defend their constraints, which can be time, budget, etc. And that's part of your job to defend your engineering constraints! You need to find a common ground between all the company constraints, engineering constraints being part of it. We can't only accept theirs and ditch ours. By maintaining some software quality, you'll maintain a healthy software, a healthy delivery pace over a long period of time (years), and a healthy quality of life in your job. Thank you ❤️

@ivantopo Oh man absolutely - the recipe is basically throwing stuff in the blender. Pure linear scalability. The upper bound is the size of your device.

Releasing something over the next couple of weeks that is overdue for a long time: Chronicle. A .NET framework and accompanied documentation on patterns that serve as my default go-to on building evolutionary architectures.

LATEST: The first flush of 2024’s rainy season and Interceptor 006 is already preventing tons of trash from flowing into the Caribbean Sea from the Rio Las Vacas, Guatemala. Will this be our largest river catch ever? Keep an eye on our channels while our crew works round the clock with two excavators to remove all the waste! 👀

We have removed over 8,000,000 kg (17.8m lb) of trash from the oceans and rivers worldwide. As a non-profit organization, it’s your donations, big and small, that make this happen. Thank YOU. You can help clean our oceans, too, by donating here: theoceancleanup.com/donate.

Another milestone in Guatemala: we have now removed over one thousand truckloads of trash from the Rio Las Vacas. 🇬🇹 This is our toughest river challenge so far, but we’re continually working to improve Interceptor 006 and keep tons of plastic from entering the Caribbean Sea.
