Hospitality has been at the sharp end since Covid. It’s also where young people can often get work. It doesn’t take a rocket scientists to add 2&2 but this governments only tool is more taxes! No government can tax its way to wealth & growth. This will not end well.

I just spoke with President @NicusorDanRO of Romania about the Russian drone that hit a residential building in Galati. I assured him of NATO’s absolute solidarity with Romania and expressed sympathy for those injured in the incident. I affirmed that NATO stands ready to defend every inch of Allied territory. We will continue to enhance our readiness to deter and defend against any threat, including from drones. Russia’s reckless behaviour is a danger to us all. They continue to target civilians and civilian infrastructure across Ukraine. And last night showed yet again that the implications of their illegal war of aggression don’t stop at the border. Russia’s war needs to end, as does Russia’s disregard for civilian safety. For our part, we will continue to strengthen our deterrence and defence at home and continue our support for Ukraine as they defend against Russia’s aggression.

@johnredwood Double-Standard John approved the privatisation of the water industry that then took £85BILLION out in profits, created £83BILLION debt and failed to invest in the tired infrastructure for over 30 years.

When is the government going to remove the blocks to get some new reservoirs built? If we have more hot days and more people living here we will need plenty of extra water. The government and Regulator have the powers to fix this. Would also add to growth and jobs.

@HistoryPegg The World at War, narrated by the great Lawrence Olivier, is the gold standard. I watch it every 10 years or so. Harrowing but delivered with such restraint.

A #History observation. Having watched the first episodes of World War II with Tom Hanks I was hoping for something more dynamic. Yes I understand it’s for a broad brush audience but it isn’t anything that hasn’t been done a number of times. The clips are interesting bits of new information but sort of a rushed history. The talking heads approach is a bit boring. On a general level ok but no really grabbing you and wanting you to stay. I’m hoping future episodes are a bit more engaging. @WeHaveWaysPod #WW2

Trying to join an EU/UK single market in goods would mean breaking the Manifesto promise not to rejoin the single market. It would mean adopting many EU rules and sending them lots of taxpayer money to help them sell us more imports.

@tigahope @johnredwood Well it isn’t nonsense is it. What he said is true. Successive governments (including his one) imported circa 10 million people without public consent or a plan on how additional water, transport, health, education and policing etc would need to be catered for.

The Climate Change Committee are right we need to put in new reservoirs. The main reason we need more water is the big increase in population this century with no new water capacity put in.

@johnredwood Privatisation doesn’t work without effective governance… which you failed to apply. You allowed profits to be siphoned off without due diligence against service improvement. And HS2 is your white elephant - no one else’s. Your mistakes, own them.

Many in Labour want more nationalisation. They might just condemn us to the lack of financial control of HS 2, to the computer skills of the nationalised Post Office and to the strikes of the train drivers for more of our essential services.

Andy Burnham wants more nationalisation. That could bring more of the disastrous management styles of HS 2 and the Post Office. Wes Streeting wants more EU. That means higher carbon taxes and energy bills, slower growth and many new laws where we have no say.
