starting to think that spending approximately 1,000 hours of the past year reading posts on this site was not actually a good use of time

@Orbital_Perigee I like complaining about Nixon too, but the sad truth is that Nixon did what the voting public wanted here

imagine being such a fucking idiot you propose the integrated program plan during the Nixon administration. Paine should be remembered alongside Shelby

ai has finally succeeded in stopping the beeping that ai has been causing. it also has been successful at fixing the broken parallel installations that it has been maintaining, of itself. and it has been successful cleaning up 10% of its own millions of line of code mess. AGI is here.

@ASevenAngels @Nexuist @Duderichy right, you buy at 90k so you can drive it through 180k. you don't want to start with something at 180k unless you know what you're doing, it's a good way to immediately end up with a repair bill well in excess of what you paid for the car

@timberwind @Nexuist @Duderichy I own a vehicle with 150K miles, and don't do much myself, so I'm perfectly familiar with mechanic prices. If it's not a total lemon, maintenance is still cheaper than buying new.

@ASevenAngels @Nexuist @Duderichy you also have not been keeping up with inflation on mechanic labor. look, if you aren't set up to be an amateur mechanic you want to look for something with less than 100k miles on the clock, preferably from Honda or Toyota, and you're gonna be spending more money

@Nexuist @timberwind @Duderichy The price of repair may be high, but even 5k repairs every year will still be far less than $40,000 for a new car, which by the way will also need repairs after a few years.

@Duderichy @Nexuist it's worse in California. $5k puts you in the clapped-out Facebook Marketplace jalopy market. I kind of enjoy buying those and fixing them up so I'm familiar with this, but if you don't do your own wrenching these are a bad idea

@Nexuist It’s definitely possible because my family has done it multiple times. Should be easier in California because cars don’t rot

What I learned by posting this is that a massive subset of online progressives think the basic logic underpinning all sorts of bigotry and prejudice is perfectly rational and good, and they just want to quibble over the premises rather than throw out the logic

Because time is a flat circle, feminists have forgotten how easily the “poisoned m&m” analogy from 12 years ago was appropriated by their enemies, and are now trying it again

Sharing one of the coolest photos from @gengalactic last year. We went from clean sheet design to operating a next-generation Hall thruster in a vacuum chamber in 43 days! This is a fully in-house design (not licensed) and among the first commercial thrusters intended for a wide variety of propellants. And we've got several other major wins to share soon, but more on that later. By far the hardest part of this was manufacturing. There are so few machinists that can work with ceramics and magnetics, even in LA. We'll be vertically integrating a lot more of the manufacturing processes moving forward.

watching Death By Lightning, the biopic they did about James Garfield. it's well done but I find it funny how the writers want to cheer on this guy as a major reformer, but also they can't talk about the big issues he actually ran on: protective tariffs and the civil service exam

@AliceFromQueens I like Armstrong, but he himself would frequently say that he was just piloting a vehicle where they had him go

I'm learning today how many men don't know what a "great man of history" is. They think Neil Armstrong qualifies. "Great man," historically, doesn't mean role model or hero. It doesn't mean "man we think is pretty great." Trump is much closer to a great man of history
Jerry Hathaway@etubruton

@nitbean @AliceFromQueens @circlemakerain but the whole point of the great man theory is supposed to be that they were *uniquely* able to accomplish whatever feat, i.e. if you swapped them out with someone else it wouldn't have happened. I feel like that's not at all the case with armstrong?
