starting to think that spending approximately 1,000 hours of the past year reading posts on this site was not actually a good use of time

We are announcing a long-term strategic partnership with NVIDIA. NVIDIA is making a substantial investment in SSI that will let us 10x our compute in the next 12 months. We reached the point where our research is worth scaling and with this partnership we will be able to. We are honored by NVIDIA’s conviction.

I hate to break it to you guys, but a literal adaptation of The Odyssey would look more like a 24-part art-house miniseries than a movie. The morality would be jarring to modern viewers, and it would contain a lot more sex than social conservatives are accustomed to.
Trad West@trad_west_

Imagine an Odyssey: >Spoken in ancient greek >Recorded with historically accurate armor >With greeks cast in it >No cringe rap videos >Actually loyal to the source material Elon Musk might make this a reality by funding Gibson

U.S. Department of Energy
Customers of the largest U.S. regional power operator, PJM, experienced a heat wave on July 2-3 that triggered peak electricity demand. During the 5pm peak demand hours on both days, 82% of available wind power failed. By sunset, despite still high temps, 99% of solar power also failed. Thankfully, we have stopped the premature shutdown of reliable power.

@NateTheSpy @generativist that's what I'm saying, the chinese models have a politics blocker as a separate classifier process exactly because they don't have bias towards the PRC and aren't good at arguing in their favor, probably because all of the english language pretraining data is western liberalsim

@timberwind @generativist I don't know much about the sota models here but I think there's probably lots of people who have the same questions... do you think there's?measurable bias even though politics as a topic is blocked? like anything interesting enough that people would pay to know

curious what metric they will use for banning chinese models. if i change a single parameter, is it still chinese? two? a larger number of them but all at the unit in the last place? or like…just a quantized model in general?

@NateTheSpy @generativist the chinese models are not currently very good at producing chinese bias. qwen has made a significant attempt, but kimi and deepseek largely haven't, they run a politics topic blocker on top as a separate model monitoring the output and block china politics in any direction

@generativist I can imagine a "service" that you pay to test the model, they ask the model 10,000 queries to test Chinese bias vs other national biases, then print the report

@SCShipyards they were both written with one hand, yeah, but Friday is the much better story. particularly liked how half the plot was a repudiation of his earlier story Gulf

I could never decide if this, or The Number Of the Beast was the stand-in for The Author's Thinly-Disguised Fetish. Either way, Friday's a good read. Number of the Beast is a good read. Just cope through it, you puritan.

@tszzl @Pehdrew_ @buccocapital like, be serious here. we're not talking about somebody exfiltrating trade secrets from inside your nonprofit. you have a machine that trains on text and emits text. how did you think this would work. you yourself worked on a model that was trained entirely on synthetic outputs!

IMHO you lose the right to complain about your IP being stolen/distilled if your IP is built on the stolen collective IP of humanity.
