In the years I’ve been making Stuff The British Stole, the biggest lesson for me has been how much history hides behind politeness—polite plaques, polite speeches, polite monarchs. I don’t have Lidia Thorpe's life experience, and it’s not appropriate for me to offer commentary on her actions. But let’s be clear on one thing: the British Empire was not a polite enterprise. Like most, it was built on conquest, power, and, yes, things were truly stolen. Many things that have not been returned or in some cases even acknowledged. It was not a polite empire.

Today is the anniversary of the @UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, 2007 (UNDRIP). Australia was one of just 4 of 143 nations that voted against the recognition of basic protections for Indigenous peoples. We later signed in 2009. It includes recognition of the impacts of colonisation and dispossession, so common around the world. First Nations Australians share these fundamental rights with all Indigenous peoples and, yet, they remain unrealised today.

Deeply disturbed by the @australian today. The excellent journalist Paul Toohey has written a powerful piece on NT Crime. Here is how it appears on the app. Note the wild-eyed Aboriginal man…/1

The newly signed global Treaty on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources and Traditional Knowledge might improve the patent system, but is unlikely to improve protection of Indigenous knowledge itself say experts from @UCNZ + @VicUniWgtn. #Echobox=1717994132" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">theconversation.com/patently-insuf…

Reconciliation Week concludes on the anniversary of Mabo Day, a legal case which had a lasting impact on Australia’s history. We take a brief look at this historical event and why its legacy is still relevant to working towards reconciliation today in the graphics below.

Every year on 3 June we celebrate Mabo Day, which commemorates the life of Eddie Koiko Mabo and marks the anniversary of the historic 1992 Mabo decision. The Australian Parliament passed the Native Title Act 1993 the following year 💚 🤍 💙 Learn more: indigenous.gov.au/news-and-media…

For #NRW2024 we launched our new artwork, commissioned under our Innovate RAP commitment. The artists, bayadherra_art, created a piece called 'Ngar-wu lotjpa yapaneyepuk', which means ‘to listen and yarn together’. Share how your school recognised #NRW2024

Today is National Sorry Day. I want to say sorry for the Stolen Generations. Sorry for the record numbers of First Nations children in out of home care today. We need to understand this is not the past, the injustices and trauma continue. We must Listen. Learn. Act #SorryDay

Pat Dodson was right. A NO vote in Voice referendum meant Nothing would be done . Confirmed by Productivity Commission damming report on closing gap -won’t close without changes in power structures. Silence from both sides since vote concerning.
