Many people think of him as a “just” a film critic, but he has also authored countless books, written weekly columns about the everyday person, provided commentary in national publications, hosted TV shows and supported community organizations. @RichardERoeper THIS!!! 👍🏽 👍🏽 The fact of the matter is, the fires may still be burning by the scheduled ceremony date. They should announce 1) everything is on hold until the fires are contained and 2) the ceremony will be a fundraiser to rebuild LA.

I know this is very minor thing in the grand scheme, but are they really going to announce Oscar nominations in one week? No one is in a celebratory mood. Maybe push back the noms a month and hold the ceremony in the summer, or move it to New York and make it a major fundraiser.

The Board’s abrupt resignation puts CPS in a worse position at a bad time. There is no excuse for it. The fact that they are completely silent takes the act from irresponsible to cowardly. We haven’t even had a public statement from them announcing that they were resigning do we? As for the new Board, at the very least they should’ve attended the City Council Education meeting. Even if they’re not “officially” on the Board, they are the Board appointees/designates. Someone has to step-up, lead and take responsibility. If the old Board has gone and the new Board hasn’t been seated, then that means there is currently no Chicago Board of Education. Is that even legal?

@xianb8 @timking I wish the departing board would talk. They went from voting 7-0 on everything to all resigning at once. What happened to lose even Todd-Breland? The Lightfoot board was independent throughout. A bunch of 4-3 and 5-2 votes.

A Letter to Rafael Wordlaw, My Murdered Former Student Dear Mr. Wordlaw, You did good. We must do better. A key tenet of the Urban Prep Creed is “We have a responsibility to our family, community, and world.” I remember when you first walked through the doors of Urban Prep in 2006; your dedication, commitment, and focus were evident. From graduating high school, to earning a college degree, to working at Urban Prep, to becoming a Deputy Sheriff, you understood the assignment and the part you had to play in its completion. As a city, we should have done more to keep you, and your twenty-one Urban Prep brothers who’ve lost their lives to gun violence, from harm. As a city, we should elect leaders who—like you—protect life, enforce laws to keep guns and criminals off the street, help people in crisis, and ensure that neighborhoods are safe. As a city, we should not tolerate even a single incident of gun violence, let alone the more than 1,800 shootings that have occurred in Chicago so far this year. Your life was taken by the sixty-nine shots fired at you, but the good you’ve done and the lives you’ve changed endure. Your spirit is bulletproof. In your honor, I recommit to fighting for the changes needed to prevent such senseless acts. I hope others will join me. We owe at least that much to you and to all those whose lives have been destroyed by violence. Thank you for giving us so much of you for 31 brief years.
