@minilek @TheFoolishPig @NewSorcerer So what does the tuition and fees pay for? Seems to me that indirect costs are being accounted for twice if the students pay for it in tuition and fees and the university take a chunk or additional chunk from grants to pay indirect costs.

I guess “labor” isn’t a clean example. You’re right that the grad student and postdoc salaries (and professor summer salary) are direct costs. But baked into that mechanic bill is the cost of maintaining their mechanic shop. It would not show up in the parts component, but would be artificially injected into “labor”. Someone has to pay for the mechanic’s rent, electric bill, advertising, accountants, and so forth.

Incorrect calculation. 60% indirect cost rate means for every dollar charged to the grant for the project, the university charges an *additional* 60 cents as overhead. So it’s 60/160 ~37.5% overhead, not 60%. The research has to happen somewhere — this pays for e.g. facilities.
