‡ Ka Ying Rising – Again Ho-hum, another dominant display, and yet another course record. It's difficult to find new superlatives to describe his brilliance. But here's a remarkable tidbit from his most recent victory: he was sent off at odds of 1/100 – ONE TO ONE HUNDRED, and the second favorite was 89/1 (results image attached)!

This is quite an interesting set of stats, and for several reasons. Is it good for the game that four trainers have won 40% of the KY Derby preps over the past ~25 years? That's a rhetorical question, the answer to which naturally leads to another question: is anyone, including the "disruptor", and those who support him, doing anything to push for changes that would help to reverse the damaging, long-standing trend of increasing concentrations of good horses into the barns of an increasingly small number of trainers? What is the significance, both in terms of the trainer, and how the game is currently designed, of these seemingly dissonant facts? Todd Pletcher has won 2x-3.75x the number of preps than next three on the list, but his KY Derby record is 65 2-2-4

Say what?! Mr. Prospector does not appear in the pedigree of Wonder Dean, which is entered in this Derby. Master Fencer, 6th in the 2019 Derby, has no Mr. Prospector in his pedigree, either. Also, any which feature Northern Dancer by definition also have Nearco, and those with Mr. P must have Nasrullah.

Saturation. Nearco, Nasrullah, Mr Prospector and Northern Dancer are all found in 20 of 20 Kentucky Derby starters. It is statistically impossible for a modern Kentucky Derby starter to avoid having all four of these sires in their pedigree.

FWIW, only 2 horses (before today) have worked four furlongs in 45 seconds (or faster) this century @ChurchillDowns: one was Kentucky Oaks winner Secret Oath in November 2021. The other was Grade 2 winner Private Horde, who holds the record with a :44.8 move in June 2004

@Tinky47flat I think for HKJC, it’s unnecessary to specifically announce to the public, “I’ve paid you an extra amount of money.” They simply need to set a regulated minimum odds and pay out accordingly—even if it means they suffer a considerable loss. That would be fine.

@MaximumDrive6 Thanks. I appreciate that they are apparently willing to subsidize bettors when horses are <1/20, but does the HKJC not provide precise odds anywhere? Or would it not be fairly easy to calculate the true odds using win pool data?

@Tinky47flat There's a minor error in RacingPost's marking here. In Hong Kong, the official minimum win odds are 1.05(=1/20).

@IndianGems_ I trekked from Pokhara to Jomsom (3,800m/12,450ft) in the late 1970s. A beautiful experience, and the Nepalese people were wonderful.

@cmoreton99 One can see how the list evolved from the earlier one that you posted, at least in part due to there being fewer older readers who had strong recollections of horses that raced in the '30s-'50s.

In December 1983, 'The Blood-Horse' published a list of the Horses of the Year in America from 1933 to 1982. From those 44 champions, it asked its readers to name the best 10 in no particular order. The top 20 champions with the percentage of voters, were published in June 1984:

I wouldn’t trade places with anyone heading into this Kentucky Derby. I’ll take Todd Pletcher, Irad Ortiz Jr., and the best horse in the race Renegade from the 1 post every time. Is it ideal??? No. But I’ll take the 1 post over 15–20 post all day with Renegade’s closing style and explosive late kick. He’ll save plenty of ground while others are running extra distance. You can get trouble from anywhere but being that far outside could cost him 7–10 lengths. And don’t forget, since 2021 with the new starting gate, the inside posts are positioned better than before. If Renegade is who we think he is, the 1 post won’t matter. No excuses. Some people say I have bad luck at Kentucky Derby. 0 for 8 plus 3 scratches. 2 of them favorites. 🤦‍♂️😂 I see it differently, I’m blessed. Blessed to have these opportunities. Blessed to have the Derby favorite with Renegade. Blessed to have Oaks favorite with Zany. Great luck to all the connections in both the Derby and the Oaks!!!!! LFG!!!!! ♥️🙏

At the beginning of this clip, the 7/5 second-favorite (blue and white silks) appears loaded, and sure to get first-run. But at the same time, the oddly named Manatee Mehmas (yellow silks), sent off at 5/6 on debut, was being ridden with great confidence. And as the finish unfolds inside the final furlong, it becomes clear why he was backed so heavily. Very impressive indeed!

@old_bobcat @craigbrogden No doubt, and I'm not arguing that the process shouldn't be reformed. But the notion that a horse being sound in April somehow precludes it from having been unsound six months prior is ridiculous on its face.

@Tinky47flat @craigbrogden Good question.Vets have an important role in horse racing and should be scrutinized by regulators as well as a free press.That said, there are far bigger problems and far more significant issues that have caused and define the decline of the North American horse racing industry.

White Abarrio whipped the two biggest bears in training at Oaklawn. I watched him go past me on his way to the gate and on his way back to the paddock. He was 100% sound both times. The vets that scratched him at the Breeders Cup should be ashamed as Kenny points out here.
