3/ I don't know how to help these students be successful. This is beyond tutoring or support units. This is not having a strong foundation in arithmetic and algebra. I am at a loss to how to close this gap effectively. The goal of #AB705 is awesome, but this solution is failing.

1/ Every day I see the failure to students of #AB705 which will continue with #AB1705 (@ASM_Irwin). I am down to 11 students from 21. I have talked with 6 of those 10 exiting students. Each of the six had not being prepared to take Trig as the primary or secondary reason.
English

@the_evil_puppy The Chancellor's office and @ASM_Irwin don't actually care about education or they would have listened to the teachers who are "on the ground" teaching math & English at Community College before pushing AB1705 which removes educational opportunities for thousands of students.
English

AB1705 (@ASM_Irwin) is as counterintuitive as AB705. While more students are getting into transfer level classes, many cannot do foundational math—something requiring significantly more than a support unit. How is a student going to learn Trig without a solid grasp of arithmetic?
English

@melissarbardo @MoorparkCollege @dcastronoguez @JetaunStevens @joshuahagen21 AB1705 will remove barriers, but it will also remove educational opportunities for thousands of community college students.
English

@CollegeOpp @ASM_Irwin AB1705 removes barriers and it removes opportunities.

"This moment has truly been 5 years in the making," says @ASM_Irwin, thanking student, community, college, and state leaders for removing barriers to transfer-level courses and maximizing student success #AB1705.

Watch now as we celebrate the signing of #AB1705 and a bold $64M investment for equitable placement in the #CABudget. Thank you @ASM_Irwin for championing equity and student success across @CalCommColleges.

@CollegeOpp @CAgovernor @ASM_Irwin AB1705 destroys opportunities for our most economically disadvantaged students, especially those that want to pursue a career in STEM. There is no longer "community" in California Community College.
English

With #AB1705 now law, students will no longer be deprived of the opportunity to take the transfer-level courses that support their success. Thank you to @CAGovernor, @ASM_Irwin, higher education advocates, and students for championing this effort! gov.ca.gov/2022/09/30/cal…

A call from Lt. Governor @EleniForCA was a great way to celebrate #AB1705 #AB1187 and $64 million going to @CalCommColleges. In #highered policy its all about your partnerships, I am so glad to have had Eleni with me on this journey for #equity and student success #CALeg

@ASM_Irwin I wish you had listened to teachers before pushing AB1705. I have a dozen students in my transfer math classes this semester who are not only not prepared for the course, their academic goals are not to transfer to a 4-year college. AB1705 is impeding their educational goals.

Today is #NationalTeachersDay2022, the day we recognize and celebrate all those teachers in our communities who work so diligently to educate our children. Thank you one and all!

@KatieHernCA @ASM_Irwin @CalCommColleges All students, except those left behind. Fail rates at first level transfer math classes increased at most district since AB705 became a law. Let’s celebrate the good it did, but not ignore the students who do need below transfer math.

@ASM_Irwin hitting it out of the park on why @CalCommColleges need #ab1705 to ensure that all students benefit from the powerful reforms ushered in by #ab705

English

@CCGRAdvocates @DrAishaLowe I hope Dr. Lowe discuss how fail rates have increased at the first level of transfer math classes at most districts since AB705 became law. Let’s celebrate the larger number of students who’ve passed transfer math, but let’s not forgot those getting left behind.

Our Vice Chancellor of Educational Services, @DrAishaLowe testifies in support of #AB1705, which clarifies and strengthens institutional practices that are consistent with #AB705.

Good afternoon advocates, the Assembly Higher Education Committee convenes today to hear a number of bills, including two that the @CalCommColleges is officially in support of (#AB1705 #AB2315) and one which we oppose (#AB2820). You can tune in here:

@KatieHernCA @CalCommColleges Did she mention the “success” data doesn’t include any students who drop within the first 2 weeks of class?

@CMC3N @KatieHernCA @AsmJoseMedina “AB 1705 strengthens students ability to make informed decisions by ensuring that the decision to recommend placement or enroll a student into a pretransfer level course is data driven and not based on other outside factors ….” - The Bill Analysis

@EricMartinsen @Windo @CalCommColleges @FACCC 58,488 of the “best prepared” students under AB705 (multiple measures) did not get through. Imagine how bad the numbers would be under AB1705 by including all students (least prepared)? And this does not include drops before census😩#ab1705 @No_on_AB1705 @ASM_Irwin

This article, by a CCC professor previously specializing in remedial edu, spells out the clear benefits to students resulting from AB 705, which I authored in 2017, and has benefited tens of thousands of students. #AB1705 builds on this progress. eastbaytimes.com/2022/04/23/opi…

@EricMartinsen @publicadvocates I agree. Let’s continue to give students access to education. No on #AB1705

Whew – there is a LOT of misinformation about #ab1705! As a community college prof, I’m frustrated that faculty organizations are opposing the bill. Here’s a thread on why we must support #ab1705 @ASM_Irwin @AsmJoseMedina @AsmStevenChoi68 @ChrisHoldenNews @FrankBigelowCA (1/13)
