@McJeff (obligatory: Surprised this site is still on. Came here to check one specific thing and here this was). I was there recently. It's all weird, anti-city hype. SF is fine. I was in Union Square, the mission and even walked through Civic Center at night. Fine. No poop. Few drugs.

@brettabecker @ShriramKMurthi @gohar94 @Joel_Emer @vivsze I'll be honest: I've seen careful analysts publishing extremely detailed estimates of the "cost per query" for stuff I know relatively well many times. The most recent one I saw was off by a factor of 10. It doesn't matter in which direction, just that it was that far off. YMMV

I think that until OpenAI opens its mouth (which due to its structure may be unlikely) we're going to be left with rough-ish estimates. But that figure roughly aligns with other estimates I've seen.

Something I've been trying to find out about fixed- vs variable-costs of LLMs: I've seen descriptions of the energy cost to TRAIN an LLM, but that's a one-time thing (as currently constituted). But how much energy does a "query" take? (Expert answers only please.)

@ShriramKMurthi @gohar94 @Joel_Emer @vivsze Also depends on where the energy comes from. Google as a whole has been carbon neutral including all datacenter power since 2007. Microsoft has pledges to become carbon negative (not sure progress). In general, power analyses here ignore this.
