@liftblog Well...pre Epic Pass I was paying around $1300 for a Merchant Pass (local worker pass) to ski at Vail & Beaver Creek. That was in the early 2000s, adjusted by CPI that would cost around $2200 today, which is nearly double a full Epic pass. Mega passes didn't = more expensive.

Law firm files antitrust lawsuit against Alterra and Vail, claims both "unlawfully inflated prices and suppressed competition through anticompetitive bundling practices tied to their multi‑mountain season passes." dicellolevitt.com/dicello-levitt…

@liftblog And yet the alternative (Ikon Pass) offered by Altera costs 28% more, but I guess they are a bunch of saints...

@WFG_DEN I think he might be saving a lot of money right now and able to blame it on ski patrol. And when the snows come, the skiers will come back too. I'm not sure the patrol strategy of striking on 12/27 during this particular year will work out the way they might have expected.

If SW Colorado doesn't get any real hit of snow soon Chuck is just going to leave that place closed till it does and spite the entire town. Completely aside from the negotiations. The weather playing a huge role here. #telluride

@liftblog @Telluride I wonder if these patrol strikes are going to motivate resorts to develop ways of operating without ski patrol as we know it today. Possibly a separate group to do avalanche control, contracting with local EMS to provide medical treatment and evac, maint workers for the labor...

@liftblog That lodging cost number is certainly suspect, but the lift cost makes sense given that so many skiers now purchase a season pass. The problem is that people new to the sport won't likely commit to a season pass, so the walk up lift ticket price is a huge disincentive to new ppl

Almost no one pays those outrageous lift ticket prices that dominate headlines. A study from the University of Utah found the average skier spent just $59 per day last winter in Utah. Riders spent more on food ($61 per day) lodging ($62) and retail/rentals/lessons ($78) than on lift access. Utah is the nation's third largest ski market and among the most expensive. d36oiwf74r1rap.cloudfront.net/wp-content/upl…

From Dan Wang’s new book. Interesting thesis. Engineers do tend to think in terms of solving problems. Lawyers profit when there are unsolvable problems. 🇨🇳

@liftblog Does an automatic lowering safety bar exist? I've ridden lifts that automatically lift the bar and bubble at the top terminal, but i don't think I've seem one that lowers the bar after loading.

@SilverPD01 @GovofCO I have to think it costs more to employ people to handle and process checks than it does to cover the bank fee, but maybe that just makes too much sense.

@liftblog I guess it's fortunate for Vail Resorts that these Wall Street types are so disconnected from what's acttually happening in the mountains. I skied yesterday on a nearly empty Vail Mountain with January-like snow. Fasten your seat belt for the next quarterly earnings call.

@liftblog I wonder if they were directed to take this action by the tramway board, or voluntarily initiated it. Also wonder when the last inspection of the failed grip occured.

Attitash will take apart every grip on Flying Bear before reopening. They are allowing uphill travel for those who want to ski from the top of Bear Peak.
AttitashMtnAlerts@MtnAttitash

@_cpeters Flyin Bear not operating until further notice as we continue to work thru reviews and inspections w/ NH Tramway Safety Board and lift manufacturer service team. Over coming days each grip will be fully dissembled, tested, inspected, and reassembled. Thanks for continued patience.

@liftblog Kinda sad that only 10% is going to charity, it's not like these have any value for reuse on another lift so the resort owner is mostly just putting money in their pocket.

@jasonblevins Did it really make any difference when OR left? Will it really matter if Sundance comes? I'm sure someone has wild estimates of economic impact, but are many Coloradans really directly impacted by this stuff?

“I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you have worn through the cartilage in one of your hips, the only solution is to get a hip replacement. On the plus side, most people that get a hip replacement can return to full activities (including heavy lifting) after a roughly six-month recovery period.”

I've been reading @forestservice ski area master plans since I was about 8 years old. Never have I seen one like this for Jackson Hole with redactions purported to protect "trade secrets and commercial or financial information." Nearly the entire mountain upgrade plan is redacted. usfs-public.app.box.com/v/PinyonPublic…
