@andyjey I tend get more bothered by the opposite, when vegan options are too healthy and/or free from gluten etc. I just want food without meat or eggs or cheese, that's it.

Apropos of nothing - It's strange to me that a lot of people see veganism as eating expensive and unhealthy processed not-meat burgers. It can also be cheap veg/rice lots of Indian, Paella, Thai etc.

@HannahAlOthman But if I'd been capable of writing beautifully that would have been a lot better!

@HannahAlOthman I just think about the way as a (local) journalist all you're after is a few quotes and a pic so your news editor has 350 words to fill some space on page 7. You're exploiting people dealing with a tragedy just for that.

Finally got around to reading this, and while he makes some interesting points, I think it ultimately falls down on this: The story is going to be in the paper *anyway*, and it’s about whether or not the family is given any input into that. (🧵please read on before arguing!)

The newsletter is out. It's about 'death knocks', how journalism justifies them and why Plymouth Live was right not to do them 👇 "A bony finger on the doorbell: Journalism's defence of the 'death knock' is self-serving..." brokenbottleboy.substack.com/p/a-bony-finge…

@tomisaac I think that used to be the case, but not so much anymore when the photos and tributes are just there on social media for the taking. Easy enough to do the story without the family’s blessing.

@HannahAlOthman Regardless of that, I was never comfortable with the fact that as the journalist, you are seeking to exploit people's grief. And you can't possibly do the person justice. And while some people are pleased to be contacted, I'm not sure that balances the distress caused to others.

@HannahAlOthman Well, often a different story. Or none at all if we're talking about local/regional paper death knocks. They depend on the photos from the family etc.

@HannahAlOthman (Genuinely no idea if this tweet was in light of some specific example though!)

@HannahAlOthman True. I reckon it's fair enough for people to be suspicious if they've actually been an activist for one party or another, and are now presenting themselves as impartial, though. Especially if they aren't particularly forthcoming about their activist past

It is really weird how people think it is some kind of “gotcha” when political journalists have previously supported a political party at some point in their lives. Like expecting football journalists never to have supported a team or been to a match before.
