What Missing a Penalty Kick on ESPN Taught Me About the Fear of Failure:
When I was a senior at Georgetown, I missed a penalty kick on ESPN National TV in the semi-final of the NCAA National Soccer Championship.
It was a brutal game.
4-4 at the end of regulation; it came down to penalty kicks.
Lose, and this was my last college soccer game.
Win, and we go to the National Championship for the first time in school history.
I was the second taker. I missed. The goalie guessed right and blocked it.
But we won the shootout and advanced to the final.
That night lying in the hotel, I wasn't happy that we were going to the final. I was terrified I would miss again in the final.
We won. We had just made school history. I played one of the best games of my career. We were going to the final.
But all I felt was dread.
Dread that I would miss again. Dread that I would be the reason we fall short.
It was so overwhelming that I remember thinking:
"I would rather lose the final than do penalty kicks again."
2 Things I Wish Someone Told Me That Night:
1. "The magic of competing is not in winning or losing. It's in giving yourself fully, believing, and striving with all your heart. To succeed and celebrate. To come up short and feel the hurt. This is the stuff of life."
2. "You have great talent, but your self-worth isn't in your talent. You're valuable bc God made you. So you are free to succeed or fail in moments like the penalty. You are still valuable."
3. "Life is about taking risks! Be proud that you were in the Arena."
I didn't know it then, but I know it now. And so I will pass it along to those on the journey.

PS: We lost the final 1-0 to Indiana University. I ruptured my tri-cep in the last 2 minutes jumping with goalie.
