Spot on. I find it irritating that people have swallowed that lie about 'the best fight the best' when in actuality MMA is more fragmented and walled off than boxing. Paranasse for example beats a lot of the UFC lightweights IMO - and in boxing a cross promotion would at least be possible.

@EmperorLetoll That’s the Saudi model with the unnecessary concerts during a card, not inherent to boxing. On the belts, that is an issue, but is not like the system is better in the UFC. In boxing you can have guys from any promotion fight for the belt, in the UFC you can’t

The problem is the UFC of today doesn’t look like the UFC of old. To me, the UFC peaked around 2016. Nobody wants boxing to look like this Meta Apex-Corporate era we are living in

There's a particular strand of boxing twitter/YouTube that's full of super cynical dullards that're extremely contrarian, hate anything remotely popular - and seems to be the working class equivalent to the middle class martial arts dorks who populate Reddit. The kind who 50 years ago would have been debating the best way to execute a 1-inch death punch.

Hardcore UFC fanboys (not MMA fanboys... UFC fanboys) are such an odd phenomenon. It would seem the company's admitted 'the brand is the star' marketing philosophy has been very successful. American sports culture has successfully tricked thousands of twenty-somethings into cheering for the corporate shareholders (and their narratives around pay) instead of the athletes taking the actual physical damage.

Is Parnasse the best fighter outside of the UFC?

@MostVpromotions The UFC needs real competition. Netflix have the financial power to actually threaten their monopoly and give the fighters a revenue share that's at least somewhat comparable to boxing.

Parnasse's performance is the biggest compliment to KSW, that there's guys of that quality in the organisation fighting month in month out. I'm more than sure he'll end up as a UFC champion unless MVP have a regular schedule on the table.

In a sport, fighters are not “made by the UFC.” They become famous in the UFC because, just like the IBC (and Don King), the UFC illegally monopolizes title. You never hear anyone say “Patrick Mahomes is made by the NFL.” A weird fan base who thinks MMA, a sport, is WWE.

@rightthero @JBGdaGoat I think Zuffa will completely take over the US market. Americans are more comfortable with that kind of closed league system. Whether they can make a dent in Europe is another matter IMO.

@JBGdaGoat I think Zuffa definitely will , at least in the lower weight classes, the heavyweights, Queensbury has that on lock for the next decade.

Journalists are now flip flopping to Zuffa.

If they put an extremely low single digit percentage of their content budget solely that's MMA they'd potentially take over the sport in about 2 years. But I don't think they have any real interest in regular live sports outside of one-off mega events. Eventually one of these streaming giants will though, the MMA would really needs legitimate competition for UFC.

Netflix could absolutely tilt the space if it wants. If Francis Ngannou wins on Saturday, Martin should do whatever he can to put a fight together with MVP for Ngannou vs. Vadim Nemkov on Netflix. I see that as a legit contest for MMA's lineal heavyweight champ.

The issue is Netflix are only interested in one off events and aren't going to be a regular rival to the UFC. The PFL want to be which is why I agree with you on supporting them. I really like the leagues in central Europe like KSW and Oktagon but given the language barrier it's obviously niche.

@arielhelwani This is only true in the States, in Britain boxing is still considerably more popular than MMA and the top fighters make more in a night than some UFC headliners make in a career - and that's even before we talk about the Saudi paydays.
