Trains, nuclear power, the Navy… At what point do we just concede that the French have done [the State] better, and start to draw necessary lessons?
Edward Stringer@edwardstrngr65

The @thetimes is a bit rubbish at links - so no article headline or illustration to help here (please sort this out @thetimes ). The article asks why the French have done high-speed rail so much better than we have.

This is precisely the sort of nightmarish, anti-enterprise, anti-joy, stakeholder state red tape the government should be scrapping. Save the Regency cafe! thetimes.com/article/6d2789…

Today we launch a new @BritishProgress report to fix one of the dumbest parts of the UK tax system: the £100k cliff-edge, which encourages some of the highest taxpayers to work less. Huge thanks to @DanNeidle for giving us such positive coverage in @FinancialTimes! We find a way to fix the cliff edge, incentivise work and make it net-positive for the Treasury. Full thread from @Ezra_Cohen_ below. He and @matthewg_stubbs did amazing work on the report.

No one should lose out by working more, but the UK’s tax cliffs can mean exactly that for low & high earners. In a new @britishprogress paper, we show how the government can end this at no extra cost. And we built a tool to show how it would affect you: tax-cliffs.vercel.app

You would have hoped that after the millionth story about tourists sitting in arbitrary detention after travelling to a brutal and capricious state against all official advice, people would simply stop going, least of all complain about being poorly treated by the British government

Perhaps London Underground stations on the ‘green belt’ with insufficient housing nearby should be shut to reduce overcrowding on the Tube and protect the rural character of the area
Neil Hudson@DrNeilHudson

🌳 A proposal has been submitted for 150 houses in #TheydonBois on #GreenBelt. Green Belt protects the nature of our precious village. I will continue to do everything I can working with community groups & residents to oppose this development & to stand up for our community. 🌳

Theydon Bois is on the Central Line, 40 minutes direct to into Liverpool Street. If the fields surrounding this station are the bar we cannot clear for new homes, this country simply will never ably house its people.

Do you wonder why you can't get mobile phone service in your town, city, or village? You're not alone. Today, I have published a paper with @yimbyinitiative (commissioned by MobileUK) on unlocking investment into mobile infrastructure through planning reform. A thread 🧵

@tomwilliamsisme Of course not. This ridiculous insinuation exposes the weakness of your argument. I never said many more new homes shouldn't be built. I said that 52,000 is too many, especially when it requires a "more permissive approach" to tall buildings almost everywhere in Tower Hamlets

Just catching up with Mayor Rahman’s announcement that he intends to allow more than 50,000 more flats to be built if he is re-elected. Most of these will be private and so do nothing to help local people. Tower Hamlets moves to unlock 52,000-home pipeline towerhamlets.gov.uk/News_events/20…

More on selling off the family silver… We would never dream of selling off the British Museum. There is rightly an outcry when a significant stately home is at risk. So why are we so cavalier about selling off our historic embassies and residences abroad, steeped in history as they are? Perhaps a (Restored) @nationaltrust or @EnglishHeritage should expand their remit and take responsibility for protecting them? We must acknowledge the importance of these assets if we want to stop ever more being sold off bit by bit.
