When the revolution comes, anyone who has written for How To Spend It will necessarily be given a last cigarette and told to stand against the wall, but I won't enjoy doing it. They have given me many hours of ghastly pleasure.

@DrMatthewSweet unironically i remain mildly peeved that, post-covid, laptops are now allowed in the main reading room. some people are v noisy typers, and there’s something oddly distracting about the hearing cadence of other people’s thoughts punched out on a laptop.

This Dutch documentary about D’Angelo’s comeback tour. Talking heads line up to call him a genius, per the usual formula, but then he opens his mouth to sing, or to rehearse the band, or just to fuck around … and he is. archive.org/embed/blk-mess…

A less Jupiterian president might have realised he was the problem. Instead he dismantled the cordon sanitaire against the right, erected a new one against the left, and in so doing became the biggest roadblock to his own reforms. Terrific work, Manu.

Might be time to dig out my old exam results. A B2 in Higher French has to count for something.

I’m proposing belief in @thefabians plot for world domination as a new sanity test. Also: Adam Curtis is great, but he also invented *the* grammar through which internet crackpots can express their fantasies. (cut from archive of HG Wells to Lenin to Tonty Blair to Klaus Schwab)

@yorksranter i thought that bit was really telling. tho - separately - i’m not sure the exciting new financing model of guaranteed cost overrun cover for private investment by government will work as well for eg sizewell c

one of my crank theories is that UK infrastructure projects are slow and expensive when they have a broadly linear geometry, because this maximises the number of potential veto actors whose patch they cut across for a project of given size
tyro@DoubleEph

@Sam_Dumitriu Something I’ve been thinking about the work you’ve done on how Britain’s infrastructure is so much more expensive than on the mainland. We are patently poor at building roads and bridges but why are we so good at building stadiums? I have no answer but …

Many of these companies — such as Tellason, 3sixteen, Gustin, Raleigh Denim, Imogene + Willie — also produce their jeans in the United States. This way, you can support US jobs. IMO, it's better to buy one pair of high-quality jeans than three pairs of low-quality ones.

@lionel_trolling also write this on Swift at the time of The Conduct of the Allies, as well as the introduction to the Penguin Gulliver’s Travels. Used to stomp affably with his large hawthorne walking stick into Foyles Bookshop and check that we still had copies. faber.co.uk/product/978057…

@eris_nerung i did exactly the same the other day. egg pizza dough made into an incredibly densely salted biscuit of the sort that you’d periodically lick to stave off dehydration in the desert.

You can find things about Bourdain annoying, that's your right, but he had good taste, was handsome, and he was funny and pretty thoughtful. You can try to create a backlash, but he was more good than bad in the realm of celebs.
