Tech story: We rebuilt our internal feature toggle UI. It looks simple in the screenshot, but hides a lot of targeting and internal logic. Biggest takeaway: with AI agents, a single developer got this done in under 5 hours. AI agents are fantastic at handling the “boring” parts of internal tooling.

Ask this simple question: would this fumble have happened if it were Tim Cook? Sundar Pichai? Satya Nadella? Obviously not. Even if they did push back, they have had years of proving their ability to navigate very complicated situations and find win-wins. Whatever happened here isn’t an issue of business strategy, it’s one of ego. It’s not my fumble. Own it.

@chamath This is a disgusting and egregious misrepresentation of the situation. How could you ever, in good faith, amplify the comparison between a direct quote and a characterization of a response? You know better than this @chamath, where have your scruples gone?

Timeline of events: Today at 9:04pm. No response yet to my calls or messages to @DarioAmodei. Today at 825pm, @AnthropicAI writes “we have not received direct communication from the Department of War.” Today: 5:14pm SecWar tweets supply chain risk designation. Today: I call Dario’s business partner at 5:02pm asking to speak to Dario because he hasn’t gotten back to me. She is typing while we speak and likely has lawyers in the room with no notification to me (that’s a guess! CA is a two party consent law so am hoping no laws were broken!). Says she “will try to locate him.” Today: I call Dario at 5:01. No Answer. I message Dario asking to talk as well. Today: Dario sends an email with redlines 3:51pm Today: @POTUS sends Truth at 3:47pm Yesterday: I email Dario comments at 10:54pm. Does this sound like GOOD FAITH?

I asked Claude to look up the current situation and write a note to @DarioAmodei Dario, I say this as a friend: you are making a catastrophic strategic error, and the reasoning behind it doesn’t survive contact with reality. Your two red lines — no mass surveillance of Americans, no autonomous weapons without human-in-the-loop — sound principled in a vacuum. But you are not operating in a vacuum. You are operating in a world where the PLA is integrating AI into every layer of its kill chain with zero such scruples, where Chinese military AI development has no institutional review board, no congressional oversight, no ACLU, and no Dario Amodei demanding terms of service compliance. The practical effect of your stand is not that autonomous weapons don’t get built. They get built — by China, by Russia, by anyone not constrained by your moral framework. The practical effect is that the one military that actually has democratic accountability, civilian oversight, courts, a free press, and a functioning inspector general is the one that fights the next war with worse tools. You are not preventing dystopia. You are ensuring that if dystopia comes, it will be imposed by actors who never had to negotiate with you at all. Consider the logic chain: 1.You pull Claude from classified systems. 2.The Pentagon scrambles to Grok or Gemini — inferior models by everyone’s admission, including DoD’s own people. 3.The capability gap between the US and China widens in domains where AI is decisive: cyber, ISR fusion, targeting, logistics optimization. 4.The probability of a successful defense of Taiwan, or deterrence of a move on Taiwan, decreases. 5.The liberal democratic order you claim to value loses its security guarantor. You’ve told me yourself that you believe frontier AI is among the most consequential technologies in human history. If you actually believe that, how can you justify ensuring the US military — the only force standing between liberal democracy and its rivals — fields second-best AI? On what moral calculus does that work out? The Pentagon isn’t asking you to help build Skynet. They’re asking you to not have veto power over how a democratically accountable military uses a tool it purchased. Their point about “all lawful purposes” is actually the correct institutional boundary: the military operates under law, under civilian control, under congressional oversight. Your acceptable use policy is a private company substituting its judgment for the entire apparatus of democratic military governance. That’s the actual God complex here. The surveillance concern is a red herring in this context. The NSA already has authorities and tools for surveillance that dwarf anything Claude enables. You’re not preventing mass surveillance by withholding Claude — you’re just ensuring that whatever AI the government does use for those purposes is less safe, less auditable, and less aligned than yours. Same logic applies to autonomous weapons. Autonomous systems are coming regardless. The question is whether they’re built on a foundation that has your safety research baked in, or on something hacked together by a defense contractor with none of your alignment work. You are selecting for the worse outcome. I know you’re getting praised right now by exactly the people you’d expect. That praise is worth nothing when the strategic balance shifts and there’s no one left to protect the system that allows companies like Anthropic to exist in the first place. You are sacrificing the security of the civilization that makes your principles possible, in the name of those principles.

In a democracy, it’s absolutely ok to define who can use the things you make and how. But it’s also absolutely ok for the Government to lose trust in you, tell you to fuck off and find an alternative. It’s also absolutely ok for you to nuke your own company in the process. The timing of this is not good for Anthropic and could be a potential boon to every other model that is exceeding expectations in their upcoming version (Grok, OAI, Gemini). More generally, I don’t see how this isn’t a slippery slope. What if a model maker updates their ToS that would block a use case that is legal but subjective? Agreeable in some states but not in others? What about in different countries with different governance or religions? It’s a huge can of worms. How can a government or company rely on a model that could have an ever-changing definition of what’s allowed without taking on major business/governance risk? They won’t. My hunch is that the company that embraces the “no holds barred” ToS will win because it’s the least risky to adopt wrt long term risk of getting rug-pulled.

Dellia pre earnings trillade in precis.

In 2025, 25 data center projects were canceled due to community pushback. That’s up from just 6 in 2024 and 2 in 2023. The opposition is notably bipartisan, driven overwhelmingly by one thing: rising electricity prices for local residents. In Q2 2025 alone, 20 projects were blocked or delayed, putting $98B in potential investment at risk. The 2025 cancellations represented ~4.7 gigawatts of lost electricity capacity. Using OpenAI’s own estimate of revenue per gigawatt (~$10B revenue per gigawatt), those cancellations represent ~$50B in lost AI revenue in a single year. Applying a 20x earnings multiple and its $1 trillion in lost enterprise value. In one year! And it’s not getting better… At least 99 data center projects are currently being contested nationwide. Historically, ~40% of projects facing sustained opposition are eventually canceled. This means many more gigawatts, billions in revenues and trillions in enterprise value are at risk if we don’t turn this around. The core problem as I see it: local residents are being asked to subsidize AI infrastructure through higher electricity bills with no upside. That’s not a sustainable ask. Until we solve the electricity cost equation, community opposition will remain a systemic and under-priced risk to the AI sector and the broader economy.

I have a simplified conjecture about AI progress. Your mileage may vary but here it is. f(i) = p × c × a where i=intelligence, p=power, c=compute, a=algorithms, multiplied together. This means neglecting any variable creates a ceiling and any breakthrough compounds across all three. One caveat is that today's advances are more accurately shaped by the entire history of prior investment, not just a discrete investment or breakthrough in time. In other words, the variables have memory over time so that must be factored in. In any event, the chart below is interesting because it shows the major tech companies operationalizing this function… If f(i) accelerates quickly, there is a point in f(i) where the gap between the haves and have-nots is so stark that negotiating leverage will flip instantly. This is the bet that Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Meta are making. This is why they are buying as much of p, c and a as possible to make sure they own the leverage that comes from f(i). Meanwhile Apple is cutting capex. Apple's implicit assumption is: “AI capability is an input we can buy, not a moat we need to build. We own the distribution and last mile so let’s wait and license the intelligence when a winner is more clear. It’s a feature that needs distribution not a platform that reallocates winners and losers.” It's a rational bet today but it's also the kind of bet that can look obvious until the day it isn't.

The curling rules aim to prevent shots from being altered. World Curling reviewed the incident and confirmed no violation occurred, as any touch was deemed insignificant. Post-game comments from Sweden noted the rule's rarity of enforcement but expressed frustration over the play. Officials' decision held.
