A LGBTQ liaison officer position was created for the department
LGBTQ awareness classes are mandatory for all law enforcement officers and recruitment trainings
I looked more into the class purpose
- Build awareness and knowledge of LGBTQ+ issues
- Train officers to be effective allies
- Create safe spaces for community members to approach police
- Strengthen relationships between RPD and the LGBTQ+ community
- Improve handling of related calls, hate crimes, and interactions
Captain Mooney also collaborates with Out to Protect, Inc. which is a nonprofit that develops LGBTQ+ training curriculum for law enforcement
