my hot take is that "fashion is art" is a terrible theme that ironically reveals the artistic paucity of the fashion industry. given a challenge to make garments that argue fashion is its own artistic medium, but everyone just makes recreations of dresses from famous paintings.

Un-Fun Fact: before the Mississippi River was walled in, it used to flood a large portion of the great planes together with its tributaries, and the topsoil would wash into the bayou, but now, the bayous are dying without those nutrients, and the topsoil is dried into a dustbowl.

Your porch light is an insect death trap. The fix takes 60 seconds.
Light pollution is one of the top three drivers of global insect decline.
Standard white porch lights pull in moths, beetles, and other night-flying insects all night, where they exhaust themselves circling the bulb until they die or get picked off by predators.
The fix: swap the bulb for a warm-colored LED, 2700K or lower (look for "amber" or "bug light" on the package). Insects can't see those wavelengths well and mostly ignore them.
You can take it an extra step by putting the light on a motion sensor so it's only on when you actually need it.
That's it. One small swap and your yard stops killing the pollinators you've spent all year trying to attract.

Every cashew you’ve ever eaten has a painful hidden story.
The outer shell of a cashew contains a corrosive liquid (CNSL) that’s chemically related to poison ivy, except it's far more aggressive.
It causes severe chemical burns, blistering, and permanent skin damage on contact. And because of that toxin, almost every cashew on Earth is shelled by hand by low-wage workers (mostly women) in India and Vietnam.
They’re often paid by the pound instead of by the hour, which means skipping or wearing through cheap gloves just to make enough money.
Many end up with lifelong scars and damaged hands. Some have lost fingers from repeated exposure and cuts.
There’s also a documented history of child labor in harvesting and past forced labor in parts of Vietnam’s industry (the infamous “blood cashews” reports).
Even “raw” cashews aren’t truly raw — they’ve all been steamed or roasted to neutralize the toxin. The label is marketing.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Here's what you can actually do to support ethical cashews:
- Look for Fair Trade certified cashews (Equal Exchange, Alter Eco, and several co-op brands are good)
- Seek out cashews from Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Mozambique, or Benin: these supply chains tend to have better transparency and working conditions
- Pay the 30–50% premium. That extra cost mostly goes toward protective gear, fair wages, and safer processing.
Most of the food we eat has a human story behind it. This one happens to be as brutal as it is fixable.
Knowing is the first step. Buying better is the second.
