The Popular Success of Top Gun: Maverick After the killing of George Floyd and the subsequent protests and rioting in 2020, it seemed to many in the intelligentsia that “culturally relevant” films needed to directly address DEI or systemic race issues to find wide appeal. Top Gun: Maverick instead leaned heavily on classic modernist heroism themes, embodied by a white, male protagonist (Tom Cruise as Maverick) who is a traditional, rule-breaking figure dedicated to honor, duty, and meritocracy. Maverick represented more traditional American values of meritocracy over aristocracy amid what was supposed to be a cultural revolution intended to set up a new inverted aristocracy.

I don't study politics, but I do study culture, and here are some of the signs that a cultural shift has been brewing for years in America that most of the professional political analysts just completely missed. Some of these may seem absurd, but hear me out. 🧵 We'll start with this one:

To all Democrats that are watching this unfold and can't understand how the public is voting for such an evil person: Take it from a former Democrat - the media has propagandized you. They have lied to you. They do not want to tell you the truth. They just want to make you a rabid Democrat supporter, regardless of how terrible the candidate is, so they can control you. They want your attention. That's it. They don't want to make you smarter or more informed. They want to control you. Today is a chance to break free of their chains. Start by recognizing that it is not your fault. Their grip is very strong. They've been doing this for decades. It is a corrupt system. Do not let other people think on your behalf. Do not outsource your intelligence. Do not let others control your mind. It's yours. Do not be afraid to trust your gut. Do not be afraid to question everything. Do not be afraid to speak out. We are all Americans. We love each other. We are building this country together. But we cannot do this effectively if we let others think on our behalf. Do not support a party just because others have told you to. Do not hate a person just because others have told you to. Only you get to decide, on your own merit. No one else.

The masks and mandates will all fade into history very soon but they won’t be followed by apologies. No one will ever apologize for what was done to our people, to our children. No one will pay for it. And we will have to let go, forgive, and move on. But we must never forget.

@adamwren I think the country remains desperate for real leadership. The question is will the folks capable of it have any interest in the job. Going to take some real sacrifice. There still are some great governors out there…

@adamwren The goalposts have kept moving, so to speak. Leaders have asked the public to blindly believe many direct contradictions. All of this even before the vaxx, and I’d say that’s a good part of the “poor” result there.
