@username_heist @DealsDhamaka Primary education is free. But It's good only if you're in the right school district. Higher education costs a bomb and is more expensive than India almost all of the times.

30% of the people that I met in the US over the last week have 4 kids + 1-2 pets … both parents working, still finding time for kids and pets Meanwhile, in India, it’s almost become a trend to have no kids at all, and give it a label like DINK

@chetan_p88 @Malay4Product @vijaythirumalai The study hasn't looked at spouses yet. So no idea how true your statement is. But would you rather have both spouses make 100 grands or one spouse make zero while the other make 10 million? The latter is more successful as a family by most tangible metrics.

DINK - quick Q, what do u do with all the time you have & all the money you make? Sure you can travel coz u don't have constraints wrt school etc but how else is ur life better compared to the friends in same position with kids Name one upgrade, I'll wait.
Vishal Bhargava@VishalBhargava5

A silent pandemic is underway in Indian cities. Far too many couples are opting to not have kids at all. It is the wrong decision. Most will regret it.

@deepakshenoy @VishalBhargava5 I didn't say you can't be skeptic about OPs opinion. I just said you can't be certain about evidence of absence. I'm not claiming evidence of presence to be clear.

@deepakshenoy @RankTurner @VishalBhargava5 IF they do, it's in private. I'm not as old as you but know many in my age group who decided to go CF, went back on it after it was late, tried IVF. Some convinced, most didn't. Don't tell me these didn't regret coz they've tried hard to undo their choice.

Most are DINK by choice. Since you asked for one upgrade, let me give you a few. :) > Sleep. Eight hours, every night, for years. That alone changes your work, your patience, your marriage, your skin. It is the single most underrated compounding asset in adult life and parents lose it for a decade. > Time with your partner. You can actually treat your marriage as a relationship, and not a supporting infrastructure of your kid's childhood. > Risk tolerance. The number of founders, artists and career switchers who quietly shelved their plans because the EMI and the school fees couldn't wait is massive. Money is actually the least interesting upgrade. But yes, Urban India TFR is already 1.6. Raising one kid in a metro costs 30 lakh to 1.2 crore. A lot of people are doing the math. The real silent pandemic 'was' people having kids because everyone else did. :)

@parthbelani_ @hierahul @VishalBhargava5 You'll NEVER see a person regret in public, a choice they made by going against social norms in a society with a honor-shame worldview. In private it might be a different story altogether.

@hierahul @VishalBhargava5 How many parents have you met who regrets having kids? I’ve met none. Also, I’ve met many who say they wish they had 2 instead of stopping at 1.

@VishalBhargava5 the future looks bleak, most cities are almost non livable, absolutely nothing in villages or even tier 2 cities! and in general everything is just bad. I don't see a single reason to have kids. What right do I have to make someone face all of this?

@deepakshenoy @Anawmaly @VishalBhargava5 Well, consequence of having/not having milk in tea is negligible. It's certainly NOT a good analogy. Maybe something like choosing one career path over other makes a better analogy in this context.

@Anawmaly @VishalBhargava5 Oh all of this is unnecessary. Milk that I didn't have in coffee yesterday means I didn't have it, period, and it did have a macroeconomic impact, and that impact exists even if I will have milk tomorrow. All big words. Choose your path. The path is made by walking.

Dear expat techbros of Bangalore. That Y Combinator gig is not where you will get your next investment. Neither is it that 9000 rupee run event or that pure veg thindi walk in Gandhi Bazaar/Malleswaram. The really big funding deals happen in Century Club, Bowring Institute, the Karnataka Golf Association, Bangalore Club and Karnataka State Cricket Association, over beers and baby corn Manchurian. If you are not a member of these clubs, find a co-founder who is. These guys have not studied in your nouveau riche Greenwood or DPS or Narayana or Brigade type schools. Nor are they former IIT aspirants from dummy schools in Kota or Vizag. They don't subscribe to Finance with Sharan. Their dads wear safari suits and are board members in nondescript co-operative banks, which they treat as their private piggy banks. They have land in Devanahalli and Maddur. Bathroom fittings showroom in Kumara Park. Your co-founder needs to be from Mallya Aditi, Valley School, Bishop Cottons, Baldwins, Frank Antony or St. Josephs (European). Management quota seat in RV or PESIT, or BCom from Surana College. Old money. Political connections. ICSE English. No Fear Sticker. Basically get a Danish Sait as your co-founder.

Just a glance of what Congress has enabled by defeating the delimitation proposals of Modi Government. Now delimitation would happen on 543 seats only and as per 2027 census data (mandate of Constitution so would happen). Here is how Southern states lose out on 2011 census itself. Imagine what would happen basis 2027 data! This is what Congress has enabled.

@burkov @pedro_cust52813 Going by linkedin, you probably have written a lot data pipelines but not Fullstack apps before AI era. I see that you're sitting on a barrel of dynamite if you "just accept what Calude gives you". All seasoned Fullstack devs would consider you an idiot.

@pedro_cust52813 I don't read it either. I just accept what Codex/Claude makes unless it doesn't work. If it doesn't work, I tell it what doesn't work and it fixes it. Ii don't say knowing computing doesn't help, but knowing specifically programming doesn't help that much.

With all due respect to Andrew, in his motivational post, he didn't explain why anyone would write code by hand. I can code, but I consider coding by hand a waste of time. So, if I, the one who already knows how to code, consider this a waste of time, why would anyone learn something which is very hard to learn only to then consider it a waste of time, like I do?

@jasveer10 @shregupta89 In Indian market, you should declare max budget upfront before extending the offer to avoid such instances. A lot of companies shortchange candidates based on current CTC (citing max hike percentage), but readily offer higher if they get a counter offer.

@shregupta89 If you get a better offer, take it. But going back to the previous company to renegotiate after already accepting the offer is exactly the point I was making.

Interesting to see how one hiring story turned into a national debate. The issue was agreeing to the offer, confirming the joining date, and then asking for a higher number after committing. Nothing wrong with negotiating. But do it before saying yes. That’s the whole point.

@sparwani @MattLaemon You don't "ask" people to have ethics. Rather create systems that enforces ethics. In India's case, enforce 15 day notice like in western countries, you'll see this offer shopping problem vanish. Until then, don't complain.

@jasveer10 @MishraAnit997 When someone looks for their first offer, the recruiters anchor the candidate based on past salary. Saying "We can offer a max of 35% hike" is very common. This forces them to offershop even to get their due. Are you sure your company didn't do this?

Market deciding salary is fine. Negotiation is fine too. But do it before saying yes, not two days before joining. The 32 LPA offer likely happened because he showed our offer. That gives the other company validation that the candidate cleared another hiring process. Startups also move fast. Many are happy to overpay if it saves 2-3 months time.

Interviewed a backend developer. Guy was at 21 LPA. We offered 28 LPA, roughly a 33 percent hike. He agreed and confirmed joining. Yesterday he emailed saying he got a 32 LPA offer elsewhere and now wants 36 LPA from us. Nonsense. Why agree in the first place. If you are still shopping offers just say it upfront. We stopped interviewing other candidates and waited through the notice period for the joining date. Now two days before joining, he came back with a new price tag.
