@_andrewvaughan @kulula We don't have any flight price data currently, but it would be very interesting to look at historical prices. Perhaps we should start collecting the data.

@kulula @trundler might be interested in checking this out. Would be interesting to see a chart of say, JNB-CPT economy flight prices and compare with current offering. Would expect to see a lower price for no checked baggage, but suspect that's not going to happen.

Anybody else noticed how the price of Belgravia gin has shot up? Had a look at the data from @trundler, which shows I'm not imagining things. Around the beginning of last year it was R 115 for a 750 ml bottle and now it's R 145. That's a 26% increase in just over a year.

The price of instant coffee has been steadily climbing. Year-on-year, it's up by about 5.9%. Instant coffee has become relatively more expensive than coffee beans (5.4%) and ground coffee (3.9%) over the last year. Time for an upgrade?

Interestingly, ground coffee prices haven't increased as much as coffee bean prices. The price of ground coffee is actually cheaper now than it was in November last year.

We're looking at the price of coffee today. A South American drought is reported to have caused a shortage in the global supply of coffee beans. Here's a look at the relative change in price of coffee beans at 3 SA retailers. What coffee beans do you buy? Has the price increased?

There's a shortage of fresh tomatoes in South Africa at the moment. Tomato prices have suddenly increased. The price of a bag of "English" tomatoes at a popular SA retailer increased by 30% over the last month. More on this soon!

@fancyfunshy We took a look at our data, and we can confirm that the price of tomatoes has indeed increased over the past month or so. Quite sharply in fact. Here's one example. Will share more soon!

Is it just me or the price of bananas and tomatoes have skyrocketed in the past few weeks 🤔🤔🤔 @trundler have you done any analysis on this recently, or am I just shopping at the wrong stores

@DanielSamuel250 We can definitely take a look at Superbalist. It's a bit tricky to find a music store that's still operating these days. Apparently Musica has just shut down. We'll start looking at some book stores though. Let us know if you think of any others, and thanks for the suggestions!

@DanielSamuel250 Which online retailers are you interested in? We're currently collecting data from major food retailers in a few countries, but not at the smaller online retailers. We could certainly take a look at them.

@trundler yes you could add, same goods whenever you do an analysis with up and coming online shopping outlets it will probably work best on other goods just wondering (about how retails or delivering companies compare on a general analysis or plane or outlook then for the future trends

@docjuank @mbeckett_za Interesting question. Products that last longer might not taste better. Making judgements about perceived quality/longevity is beyond the scope of what we could do for this analysis - don’t have the resources for that. If you're keen to take things further, we can send the data.

@docjuank @mbeckett_za Ouch? Nope. The objective of the figure was to compare time series between two retailers. Here's the same plot including zero. It's helpful for appreciating absolute price but not relative changes.

Pine nuts tend to be rather pricey. Over the last year though, they have become a lot more expensive. At one major SA retailer, the price of 100g of pine nuts rose by R25 (about 18%) over the past year!
