@trxdfos Both are great solutions, and better than 99% of anything else you could do to secure your bitcoin. But my point was that those secure elements that store your keys are able to be accessed by tools that most people are led to believe don't exist.

Why do I not trust secure elements? I once saw, first hand, a device that could instantly read the data inside any secure element we could get our hands on. It may sound unbelievable, but I saw it with my own eyes. This device exists. It is not in the open market (obviously). Surprisingly, it wasn't a black market tool either. This was a device used for testing. The manufacturers know about it. They are the ones that provided the keys. No, I don't personally have access to it, and I truthfully don't know where to find it. The only person I knew that knew where to get it has long since retired. It is a closely guarded secret. But one day, it was on my desk. If you are using a secure element as part of your bitcoin storage, I would encourage you to include a stateless or blind oracle device as part of a minimum quorum so you aren't able to sign a transaction with a secure element wallet alone. A recommended 2-of-3 multisig setup might look like this: SE wallet = ColdCard Stateless = Seed Signer Blind oracle = Jade That way there is no single point of failure. Btw, there are only a very few (maybe 2 total) companies that make these secure elements. Most of them come from the same manufacturer. Secure elements are definitely a requirement in today's world, and I'm not saying they are worthless. Just want you all to know that there are still vulnerabilities with them.

12 bitcoin security levels? Which ones would you add?
Rob | Bitsaga.be@BitsagaRob

12 bitcoin security levels: - level 0: on an exchange. You don’t really own anything. - level 1: hot storage on a closed source shitcoin wallet (like @Ledger) - level 2: hot storage on an open source bitcoin only wallet (like @bluewalletio or @SparrowWallet) - level 3: cold storage on a usb hardware wallet with shitcoin support - level 4: cold storage on a bitcoin only usb hardware (like @COLDCARDwallet mk4 or @BitBoxSwiss) - level 4: cold storage on a bitcoin only airgapped hardware wallet without reproducible builds (like @KeystoneForBTC) - level 5: cold storage on a bitcoin only airgapped hardware wallet with reproducible builds (like @FOUNDATIONdvcs Passport) - level 6: analog-only airgapped cold storage (Passport supports this) with self generated ephemeral seed - level 7: cold single seed + passphrase (protect against seed compromise) - level 8: Shamirs secret sharing cold single seed (protect against seed compromise & introduce fault tolerance) - level 9: hybrid 2/3 multi-sig with 1 hot key - level 10: full cold 2/3 multi-sig - level 11: hybrid 3/5 multi-sig with 1 hot key - level 12: full cold 3/5 multi-sig Could be split up further but might not make a lot of sense. Bonus points for connecting to your own node at any level. I’m sure many will disagree somewhere. What would you change? What would you remove or rank differently? Note higher security is not always the best fit for your situation.

It makes sense to be willing to give users control over their entropy, but let's keep in mind that humans are very very bad at creating entropy ... with human tools like dice rolls or cameras. There's a real risk that a part of the users will turn our less secure by trying to generate it themselves. Currently when generating a BIP39 seed, Keycard is using its TRNG entropy (BSI AIS-20 conform as part of its EAL6+ certification). There's a good thread about this question on the github thread below and we tend to agree with @craigraw github.com/sparrowwallet/… This being said, we keep thinking about how Keycard users could add some entropy to the one generated by the TRNG.

Ledger
Ledger@Ledger·
Hi @InfoGtm, we strongly believe in an open-source approach. It's a great set of principles that advocates openness and transparency, some of our core values. That's why we're constantly working towards making source code components available, reviewable, and auditable. Importantly, a majority of Ledger's code is open source, including Ledger Wallet™, Wallet API, Secure SDK, and embedded applications on our devices. Open-source software reduces the need for trust from users, however, it's not entirely bulletproof. Open-source software on non-secure chips will still be highly vulnerable to side-channel and fault attacks. Given the choice of using the Secure Element and being almost completely open-source vs using a non secure chip and being fully open-source, Ledger chooses the more secure approach. We encourage everyone to research thoroughly and make informed decisions about their security. With a decade of innovation and over 8 million devices sold, Ledger stands as the trusted leader in hardware wallet security. Ledger takes transparency seriously. While we employ proprietary software for our Secure Elements, this choice ensures the highest level of tamper resistance and security. You can review key components like the OS commands dispatcher and entry points of Ledger Recover implementation, with more parts of the Ledger OS being gradually released for verification. Our proprietary software is essential for the security of the Secure Elements, which utilize advanced technology from trusted manufacturers to implement hardware countermeasures against potential attacks, even with physical access. Some code is tied to the Secure Element's security peripherals, which are proprietary intellectual property of the manufacturer. Revealing this would compromise the very security we aim to protect. You can learn more about our approach to open-source software in this article: support.ledger.com/article/111323…
