Being against UBI is totally fine.
But so many of the arguments people make against it insult my intelligence.
For example, the idea that if people aren't forced to work, they will lose all meaning.
Many people dislike their jobs so much that they would trade working just to survive for the possibilities downtime opens up. Since when do we find meaning in doing something we despise?
Has work for survival become our new idol?
What about spiritual work, reading and studying, teaching, family time, growing food, working out, enjoying hobbies, and so forth?
I'd flip this whole conversation—the fact that so many people think work is the primary source of meaning is a bigger problem than people having the option not to work.
And UBI wouldn’t make working impossible; it just means people could be much more selective about what kind of work they do.
That’s freedom and agency at its best.

The adults are in the room 🇮🇹 🇬🇧 🇫🇷 🇩🇪, and it’s quite refreshing to see. When you consider their political leanings are not the same, but they understand the urgency at hand. It reminds me of the clear up after a petulant toddler has wrecked a playgroup.

99% of people really do not understand abundance as Elon describes it. The fundamental reason is that they don’t understand compound growth. Same people who would probably pick 1 million dollars today over a penny that doubles in value every day for 30 days. It’s a bad choice by the way. You lose out on millions. Imagine if that doubling object was a labor producing robot instead of a penny. Compounding labor. It’s actually crazy if you try and wrap your mind around it. So Elon mentions Universl High Income and the midwits flip a lid. “The elites won’t share” You don’t get it. They won’t need to share. They will make everything so cheap, it is effectively free. Charities will have immense resources to distribute. Unfathomable intelligence will exist to help optimize production and distribution. An unfathomably large labor pool will exist that operates on solar power exclusively. The public work projects that are erected will be unseen before levels of breathtaking. I think we are incredibly blessed to steward this new age of abundance. Can you see it now? Can you see the future?

Universal income is socialism. I’m laughing so hard at the people saying “hey, I will able to do hobbies and whatever I want” you do realize that’s the same things people who want socialism think will happen and it’s not even close to reality. Whether it’s Mamdani’s or Elon’s plan, the outcome is the same. Why don’t people get this?

Many in the comments are stuck in slave consciousness. They believe all must work in order to have meaning. This mindset must change. There're people whose purpose isn't found in work. Stop looking down on humans' ability to create & evolve when working for survival is not needed

Not every technocrat is a Socialist, but all Socialists are inevitably technocrats. It's not that I distrust their motives. I think most wealthy Socialists truly mean well. It's that I am now old enough to know human nature and Pournelle's Iron Law will guarantee *all* technocracies descend into regulatory nightmares of arbitrary and often cruel despotism. Which targets and harms the very classes of people Socialists claim to champion.
