250 years ago, this country was founded on a radical idea that government answers to the people. Today, that idea is under attack by a man who embodies the very tyranny our Founders rejected. Let's honor the promise of America by defending our democracy.

Today marks 250 years since a small group of newspaper editors, farmers, and soldiers signed a document declaring our nation’s independence — a truth that feels self-evident now but was revolutionary then. What a privilege us Americans have, to live in a nation that every one of its inhabitants can shape. What an honor us New Yorkers have, to look out over our city’s waters from the shores where so many Americans bravely entered their country for the first time. Today and all days, let us remember that patriotism is not pretending our nation is without flaws. Patriotism is every act of righteous dissent — because loving our country means fighting for the best version of it. Happy Fourth of July, New York City.

JUST IN: NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani used America’s 250th anniversary to sharply criticize the country, accusing the U.S. of allowing children to go hungry while billionaires and “oligarchs” gain more power. He said America’s wealth was built by working people with “calloused, dirt-streaked hands" while accusing the country of allowing the wealth built by workers to be concentrated in “the soft hands of a precious few.”

Robin was an excuse for the 1940s artists like Dick Sprang to draw him in bondage situations. Those old comic books are alarmingly weird to look at now.

Batman has barely scratched the surface of that mythology because the Robin part is so fucking weird and inappropriate. It's hard to justify a grown ass man taking a 14-year old boy and turning him into brightly colored partner in tights. Chris Nolan literally hits a wall when he introduces an older Robin, but it still breaks his dead serious algorithm and Nolan quits the franchise. Joel Schumacher, the gayest franchise director that ever lived, couldn't help himself when he finally got to play with the homoeroticism of Batman and Robin and slapped nipples on them. If you can get around the child labor laws and overall bad parenting of Bruce Wayne, there are very interesting stories to be told about that relationship, specifically Jason Todd's death and then resurrection as a villain. But ultimately 1960s Batman probably got it right. Robin is just such a ludicrous character, once engaged, he changes the tone and better to laugh than get weirded out.
