On Friday evening at approximately 6:30 pm, an unprovoked attack occurred between two patients in the Royal Alexandra Hospital emergency department waiting room. Both individuals were seeking care at the time. Two Edmonton Police Service members were on site, along with four AHS Protective Services officers assigned to the emergency department. The situation was quickly de escalated, and the assailant was taken into custody. Police confirmed there was no ongoing risk to the site. I want to acknowledge and thank the Edmonton Police Service, AHS Protective Services, as well as the social workers, emergency department staff, and physicians who responded swiftly and professionally. Their actions helped ensure the safety of those present and provided timely care to the victim. Enhanced security measures have already been approved and implemented as part of the Royal Alexandra Hospital Action Plan, including adding additional security personnel to the site. In addition, AHS is advancing a weapons screening program for the site. The request for proposals has closed, and we are working to accelerate implementation timelines. This program will add an additional layer of protection for both patients and staff. We recognize that incidents like this are unsettling. No one, patients, staff, or physicians, should feel unsafe in our hospitals. I remain committed to ensuring a safe environment for those seeking care and for the dedicated health care workers who provide it. We will continue to take steps to strengthen safety at this site.
