High-speed rail is ideal for a country like Japan because trains can travel from one side of the country to the other in a few hours.
Using the same technology, it would take over 15 hours to travel from New York to LA. America's urban centers are simply too spread out for rail to be a realistic mode of transportation in the age of air travel.
High-speed rail might work in certain parts of the country, like the Northeast corridor, South Florida, or California, but it will never replace the airplane as the primary method for traveling from one side of America to the other.

@smittie61984 There is a reason that table shows metropolitan regions though, most of Manhattan is wealthy and white in terms of who lives there but people from all around come in to work. Walking on the sidewalks or going on public transportation does not look at all like Portland
