Yea, because he ran away with MVP in those years. The defense didn't matter because nobody was close enough to him to make it matter. That's the difference. It's possible to win MVP as a meh defender but the harder the competition, the higher that pushes the offensive bar.

Harden had similar stats to Luka now in 19 and 20. Giannis lapped him both years. Defense played a big part in Embiid beating Jokic in 2023. Those guys have absolutely had defense held against them in MVP races. They were just so undeniable in the years they won it didn't matter.

I just think it’s fair to say in MVP debate Luka is only player I ever recall being argued against bc of defense. if that’s the differentiator for this yrs competition, then so be it. but at this point it feels like Luka has spent most of his prime being held to different standards than his peers.

this is a super close race to me so I wouldn’t be mad if kon wins. I get it. but what cooper is asked to do vs what kon is is a big difference. also the notion that cooper requires more usage to impact a game is something i’d challenge.

The Kon vs Flagg debate tells you a lot about how people evaluate basketball. Kon's probably the best off-ball rookie scorer I've ever seen, having the best 3pt shooting season of any rookie ever and the best current season from behind the arc. Cooper's a very good player, but there's nothing he does that is as elite as Kon's off-ball threat. Kon is also a solid defender, a capable playmaker, and requires a much lower usage to impact the game in a way somebody like Cooper Flagg can. Cooper's ceiling is ridiculous and he's so young, but this is Kon's award to lose.
