Normally they might find another engineer to do this work, but my whole team was aligned with the privacy concerns. Twitter had also just done layoffs (aside: time is a flat circle), so there were no spare engineers around.

2./ Mastodon's instructions for maintaining an instance include building from source or running an image. Neither is a good security practice. I'm worried about this too for longevity. It'll be exciting as admins figure all this out in real time.

@FiloSottile @cronokirby The crisis was solved when the build team quickly integrated pre-commit filters. They had been meaning to do it anyway. Then all people had to do was swirl around the office shouting “rebase! rebase!” The emoji was “🥲”

@FiloSottile @cronokirby At Nest, my “junior fuckup” was including an emoji in a commit message. It passed the pre-merge tests, but in main crashed the ENTIRE Jira CI server. ALL builders. Brought the company to a screeching halt for 2 full days bc people kept accidentally reintroducing it. I blame Jira.
