also I know it’s tempting to think huge parts of your life AREN’T totally at the mercy of a braindead billionaire but truly, he has no plan. there is no plan. this was not planned. he’s just a fucking idiot. sorry

2./ Mastodon's instructions for maintaining an instance include building from source or running an image. Neither is a good security practice. I'm worried about this too for longevity. It'll be exciting as admins figure all this out in real time.

@colmmacc" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">mastodon.ie/@colmmacc . I signed up for the Irish Mastodon instance, though I'm not leaving here. They're well run and are the only instance that could moderate my very occasional posts in Irish! I spent some time digging into how Mastodon works today and have some thoughts ...

Small open-source milestone: had an issue with my program, found another popular repo to see how they approached the problem, and discovered they'd just copy/pasted my code in 🥰

@FiloSottile @cronokirby The crisis was solved when the build team quickly integrated pre-commit filters. They had been meaning to do it anyway. Then all people had to do was swirl around the office shouting “rebase! rebase!” The emoji was “🥲”

@FiloSottile @cronokirby At Nest, my “junior fuckup” was including an emoji in a commit message. It passed the pre-merge tests, but in main crashed the ENTIRE Jira CI server. ALL builders. Brought the company to a screeching halt for 2 full days bc people kept accidentally reintroducing it. I blame Jira.

Me: trying to make a nice bytes-based internal API for crypto/rsa. RFC 8017: "Note that the octet length of EM will be one less than k if modBits - 1 is divisible by 8 and equal to k otherwise, where k is the length in octets of the RSA modulus n." (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

@FiloSottile Hate the results of this poll… I want to get into web development and once again I have One More Thing to learn and do. 25% even think it’s mandatory! Just venting.

How do you feel about websites, and blogs in particular, adapting to the system-wide dark mode setting? I used not to care, but I'm now switching more often to work outdoors and I appreciate that everything (but Twitter) switches consistently.

finally solved by booting an old laptop that was using 1password 7 and exporting the database after decryption. had to turn off wifi because i invalidated that device when i updated, so it would delete the account when it tried to sync. hope this helps someone!

wow i think i just bricked my @1Password personal account if u upgrade to 1password 8 and have a personal account linked to your work account, u MUST save the pwd for your personal account (which is not the same as for the work account) outside of 1password itself

Here's the thing: Cloudflare like to fancy themselves the provider of the Internet itself, bound to some neutrality ideal. Instead, they are just a private company existing in society, where the decent thing to do is to #DropKiwifarms.

I've been covering bad parts of the internet for long time now. For years, there was one site extremist researchers warned me not to cover because publicizing it would be dangerous. But it's time people know KiwiFarms—and how they're chasing political enemies around the world.

In 2015 I decided on a whim to check out Tesla's battery swap station that was earning the company 9 figures in California ZEV credits, and found it wasn't real. Instead Tesla was using diesel generators to charge cars. Here's how this changed my life 🧵
