Prior to ~2012 American culture was earnest in a way that zoomers would find incomprehensible. No irony, no one cared about being cringe. They were totally cool with being le epic bacon chungus. The webcomic Ctrl Alt Delete represents this era to me

@woke8yearold i got back into science fiction & fantasy just after rpo dropped, and it was instructive watching the small undercurrent of writers going, "yes, so innovative and interesting! not really *for me*, but," swell into the entire community realizing it sucked lol
