@Ralph_9000 @NEMonarchist The Eastern Code of Canon Law did NOT EXIST at that time and a special wxcommunication was promulgated applying to the ENTIRE Church in 1951.

Cardinal Slipyi: >consecrated multiple bishops against the wishes of the Pope >claimed 'grave necessity' >sacraments widely available; the only 'necessity' is preservation of the historical Greek Catholic Rite in Ukraine >never excommunicated or charged with schism >cause for canonization under consideration dang, that’s crazy

@wecek321 @NEMonarchist This doesnt matter. In 1951, there was an explicis specialissimo excommunication created that applied to the entire Church to address consecrating a Bishop without papal mandatum or canonical provision.

@NEMonarchist He wasn’t in any doctrinal opposition to the pope nor was he claiming to defend the Faith from the pope. The hierarchy of the UGCC would have died out if not for him, while the hierarchy of the Latin Church was and is perfectly fine.

@NEMonarchist @pontificatormax There was very little contact between Rome and his see due to the Soviet Union. His actions were later approved by Rome. The SPPX case is entirely different. Not least because they have been told by the Roman authorities to not consecrate

As John Senior wrote in '88: "Once there was a single Church with two contending popes. Now we have a single pope with two contending churches -- one of which is real. Meanwhile, the hungry sheep demand their food, and someone, in pious "disobedience," must carry out that office in the teeth of invalid commands and sanctions."

@uconsent I’ve read nearly everything of his (even his impossible to find Doctoral Dissertation). Many of his godchildren are personal friends of mine. I love discussing his work. It often makes an appearance in my preaching.

Some initial thoughts on Pope Leo XIV’s Encyclical Letter Magnifica humanitas: Similar in feel and style to the verbose documents of the Pontificate of Francis, filled with Tucho’s voice especially on the emphasis on discernment. The TL;DR is AI is not inherently evil but is never neutral and carries risks of power concentration, inequality, and loss of human dignity. The Church offers principles for discernment rather than blanket rejection.

Today, more than ever, without prejudice to the right to self-defense in the strictest sense, it is important to reaffirm that the “just war” theory, which has all too often been used to justify any kind of war, is now outdated. [182]

@pontificatormax What Pope Leo really Meant: 👇 “Today, more than ever, without prejudice to the right to self-defense in the strictest sense, it is important to reaffirm that the 'just war' theory, no longer fits nicely with modern liberal ideology. Therefore, it must be changed."

Correct. The Just War Theory remains, but Augustine & Thomas had no concept of modern warfare. Here’s where their fellow Doctor comes in, John Henry: how does the Church develop this teaching, remaining faithful to it, but ensuring it addresses the age in which we live, facing the challenges & dangers of these times? This is where the Church & her theologians & thinkers, who have different views on the JWT, get together, pray, reflect, & talk. One thing is sure, the Church can’t withdraw into an ideological bubble to safeguard orthodoxy. Remaining orthodox & prophetic, she must engage, dialogue with, & challenge the world. Pope Leo is aware of this.

So, I’ve read some of the encyclical, I’ll continue it later (work!). But the voice of Leo XIV is clear, it’s his work. It’s beautifully written. And I hear other voices too: Leo XIII, as one would expect, but also Pope St John Paul II - his work & thought on the dignity of the human person. We have yet to mine the depths of John Paul’s philosophy & theology of the human person.

Catholic warmongers will go nuts over this one! “Today, more than ever, without prejudice to the right to self-defense in the strictest sense, it is important to reaffirm that the 'just war' theory, which has all too often been used to justify any kind of war, is now outdated." -- Pope Leo XIV, Magnifica Humanitas
