“We were told that the mangoes can’t be turned into pulp and juice. We would eat what we could and leave the rest to rot,”- Huda Abason Oleru, the Minister of State for Veteran Affairs and Aringa East MP. #Nilezilla

Estimated 875,000 metric tonnes of mangoes produced per year, 80% are lost due to the postharvest mishandling. Nilezilla successfully turned this challenge into an opportunity.
This product entry is expected to boost import substitution and value addition, cushioning Uganda against the estimated $10m spent annually on mango puree imports.
The Lodongabased factory in Yumbe district plans to produce 2,500 metric tonnes of mango pulp annually. #Nilezilla

Nilezilla has launched Mango Puree, a locally crafted organic pulp for manufacturing mango beverages.
This success traces back to the hard work beginning in 2013, driven by joint efforts from scientists, the Government of Uganda, and fruit farmers.
The flagship product will initially serve the local beverage industry before the company expands production for export, retail and household consumption. @nilezilla38621 @RuthBiyinzika @MatiaK5 @NoreenMunabi @udc_uganda @ddokoria1

Mrs. @Allen_Kagina, Chairperson @TVETCouncilUg, said the discussion on skills development must start with a basic question: “Why are we educating children?”
She explained that parents expect education to prepare young people to become independent and productive, yet the system still trains them mainly to pass exams rather than to build practical competence.
She noted that the education pipeline has long been misaligned with labour market needs. She said, “We trained children to become lawyers, engineers, and doctors, but how many of those can a country absorb?” She added that those who did not meet the highest academic grades were pushed into vocational paths as a fallback, which created stigma around technical careers.
Mrs. Kagina said this approach left industries unable to find the technicians they need. She noted that factories require mechanics more than engineers, the health sector needs more nurses than doctors, and tourism needs skilled guides and marketers. She highlighted a case where a steel manufacturer could not find suitable technicians because, as she put it, “We all took our children to study engineering.”
She stressed that addressing the skills gap starts with changing mindsets. She said parents must understand that economies rely on technicians, welders, mechanics, and operators who keep industries running. She added that as automation, AI, and robotics expand, Africa must train these skills now rather than later.
Mrs. Kagina clarified that government has acted on these challenges. She referenced the 2019 TVET Policy, which documented the weaknesses in the system, and said the new TVET Act of 2025 responds directly to them.
She stated, “Every problem identified in the policy is now catered for in the Act.” She reported that the Council is moving to upgrade training institutions, revise the curriculum, and re-certify trainers to improve the quality and portability of skills across borders.
