#COP29 ended with a deal to have advanced economies - the ones responsible for the bulk of historical green-house gas emissions - provide $ 300 billion p.a. to developing economies, to cover the costs of adapting to a climate change problem the latter did not cause. That is way less than what economists say is needed, and reactions from country delegations were swift. This deal is just an “optical illusion,” #India’s representative said. $ 300 billion isn’t just unrealistic, #Nigeria’s Climate Envoy said, it “is a joke.” The old target of providing $ 100 billion p.a. was only met years after the 2020 target, even though it was agreed to in 2009 (#page=17" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">unfccc.int/resource/docs/…
) Skeptical African policy makers would argue - justifiably - that the new $ 300 billion target will be no different. Countries will scramble to raise resources to deal with damage from increasingly adverse weather, as #Zambia, #Zimbabwe and #Malawi are doing in 2024, with very little support, if any. “We (i.e. African states & policymakers) should stop being naive,” @MoghaluKingsley told me in our November 27 conversation. “We should “stop believing the “gospel” of international development as spread by developed countries when they make promises, and never or mostly, don't meet those promises. So whose responsibility is it? Are you going to take them to court? You still have to solve your own problems.” #climatechange #climatefinance #climatejustice #baku #drought #floods
