I hack in C++, LISP, Rust, Coq & Idris. I think a lot about writing provably correct code. I sometimes spout-off opinions on other topics.

As someone diagnosed with slow processing disorder, I'm not down with the flippant use of "retard".
It doesn't hurt MY feelings, but I can see how it would marginalize people of lower intellect to become the standard by which all shitty things are measured.
We're born how we're born. Intellect is 85% heritable, and no one gets to choose their parents. No one should try to take credit for innate privilege.
Do better, as the pedantic folks say.

@MikeHudema This is footage of the Palisades fire. It was started by an arsonist, and allowed to reach this size through government incompetence (failure to manage vegetation, no water in the mains, &c).

'Historic' fires across Canada
'Once in a lifetime' fires in Argentina
'Once in a generation' floods in Indonesia.
All around the world the signs of the climate crisis are everywhere.
How many more 'historics' before we do something about it?

I've been working on a new project, github.com/sp1ff/indielin…. My elevator pitch is "del.icio.us in the Fediverse". I hope to bring the benefits of federated web services to social bookmarking to produce a better means of content discovery.

@jdegoes Life is inherently political; it leaks into everything we do, consciously or otherwise. This is especially notable when select groups make other people's lives a political topic.
It is impossible to ban 'politics', a fools game, and fight against intolerance is eternal

Having seen and survived more than a decade of political insanity in tech, my recommendations for healthy open-source projects are simple:
- No politics in open-source (left or right)
- No COC, language policing, political banners, or any other divisive and inherently political symbols and tools of power
- No consideration for conduct in other communities; whatever they said on X or BlueSky is irrelevant
- Speech and conduct within the project should be professional and focused on the goals of the project
- The only valid reason to ban someone is because they are making MORE work for core contributors than their contributions justify (if Stalin wants to submit a good PR, merge it without fuss)
- The only valid reason to moderate is because someone can't respect the above, and in such a case, the moderator, moderation decision, and moderated content should be transparent to guard against abuse
In a nutshell:
Code first. Be professional. Leave politics at the door.

@esrtweet Nah, I never hear it when there's a Democrat in the White House.

I think I've heard somebody say this approximately every 15 minutes since about 1965.

I don’t think Americans realize yet just how much our standing has declined in the eyes of the rest of the western world. The majority of Europeans, Canadians, Australians, etc. see us as a slowly dying clown empire that have chosen to self-entertain ourselves to death.

@Hotshot_Movie This is a common reason: nypost.com/2025/01/14/us-… it's also very difficult to secure permits for controlled burns

Why don't we just...do it before the fires ever hit?
