@ckparrot The main reason being that people wrongly think the Dolphins 2026 dead cap numbers are for monies being paid to players who are no longer on the team. Meanwhile, Tua is the only player whose dead cap number includes 2026 salary and bonuses.

@ckparrot Excellent breakdown. I wish there were a separate category for dead cap from money previously paid to a player for services rendered v. dead cap for money being paid to a player for services provided to another team -- Tua's number is a mix of both. Maybe debt cap v. dead cap.

No interest for 18 months credit card is the right mental model, especially as you've touched on how the NFL's salary cap appreciates 8% a year. The key is making your wise decisions at the spend level, not the credit/accounting level. You SHOULD take advantage of zero financing, whenever available, particularly if you have a fast-growing budget. But that SHOULD NOT be an excuse to spend more money than you have built into your longer-term, sustainable budget paths.
Joe Schad@schadjoe

I tend to agree. Like with my no-interest-for-18-month credit cards I have to have self-restraint. Unfortunately my salary doesn’t go up like the NFL salary cap. Smart, responsible people needed for these void-year decisions, for sure.

@ckparrot There is only 1 downside to void years, and pushing off cap charges - losing potential comp picks. Otherwise, there is no downside. It is an interest free credit card, where your credit limit is always increased. This year's cap charges are just the minimum payment.

At this point the people fighting wars against void years are yelling at the tide to stop coming in. It’s a superior strategy given the accounting rules laid out by the NFL. There will be simple rules teams apply to decide whether appropriate or not appropriate.

#Dolphins restructured De'Von Achane deal lowered salary to $1.145M by conversion of $4.622M into signing bonus, new 2026 salary cap figure $2.308M 2027-2030 voidable years Adds $4.622M total guaranteed in addition to prior $954,508 total gtd from previous contract

@upthepool @GhostOfAdamGase @ATLSportsZone @illlrrr4 Dude do you know how dead money works? They have to pay him all his guaranteed leftover. Miami owes Tua $99 million dollars in guaranteed money they will have to pay him and that’s why they spread em in two years. Smh

💰 QB market perspective… Daniel Jones — coming off an Achilles tear — just signed a 2-year, $88M deal. Meanwhile the Atlanta #Falcons signed Tua Tagovailoa for $1M… and people on this app are complaining? 🤔 That’s incredible value. #DirtyBirds

The #Colts are locking in their QB, finalizing a deal with Daniel Jones to secure the most important position, per me and @TomPelissero. It’s a 2-year, $100M contract done by his agents at @AthletesFirst. The biggest two-year deal in NFL history.

@GhostOfAdamGase @finsup808 @ATLSportsZone @illlrrr4 If Tua had no guarantees in 26, we would take a $44 million dead cap hit, despite not paying him anything because we paid him that money and never accounted for it on the cap, so upon the cut, it becomes due on the cap.

@GhostOfAdamGase @finsup808 @ATLSportsZone @illlrrr4 So, we will take a cap hit in 27, but no $ from Ross to Tua will take place in 27. I kind of wish there were two names--dead cap (the $55 million we are paying Tua to go away this year) and debt cap (money charged against our cap for previously paid monies and not accounted for).

@GhostOfAdamGase @finsup808 @ATLSportsZone @illlrrr4 Hopefully. There is $99 million of cap that needs to hit our books. $55 million of that is for money Tua will get in 26. All of it. Nothing owed to Tua in 27. There is $44 million for monies paid to Tua in previous years that didn't get charged to our cap.

@GhostOfAdamGase @ATLSportsZone @illlrrr4 We are paying him $55 million to stay away, not $99 million. The rest is just cap charges for money paid to him during previous years that we did not account for and were forced to upon his release.

@KyleCrabbs @OmarKelly Kyle and Simon are right on this one. Every dollar paid to a player must be accounted for on the cap, whether now or later. We don't have cap now, we will have cap later, because our cash spend is down dramatically. So, better to account for it later.

@SiClancy @OmarKelly As Simon said, it is not bad at all. There is literally nothing bad about. We get cap relief now. We will have to account for that bonus money later, but there is no interest, the cap goes up, and we have dramatically reduced our cash spend, so we'll be able to absorb it, np.

@OmarKelly The Jackson contract ALREADY had $10 million in void/dead money from max restructures by Grier in 2024 and 2025. So it’s actually only $2.5 million of NEW dead/void money from this new lump sum payment on the adjusted contract. So the void years are completely irrelevant.

Do you know how BAD it is to put 4 void years on a one year contract? Dolphins still conducting bad business.

@SiClancy @OmarKelly Agreed. And, this is credit on an interest free credit card. The only downside is you won't get comp picks if the player leaves at the end of the contract, because they will be technically cut.

@OmarKelly They're irrelevant. That's the point. As I said, using void years is stacking credit, not debt. It’s like increasing your credit limit. There’s nothing bad about that. The debt only increases if you spend it. So don’t spend it. It's a no brainer to use them if the NFL allows it.

I unfortunately can't go ... glad you enjoyed the show, though.

@PoupartNFL did you get your tickets for Steve Hackett on Sunday night? The setlist is right up your alley - The Cinema Show, Dancing With the Moonlit Knight, Aisle of Plenty, Firth of Fifth. My son and I went last night in Clearwater - 10/10. Our favorite was Supper's Ready.

@flasportsbuzz @OmarKelly @davehydesports We are gaining cap space when all is said and done. Short term, yes, we are losing cap space, because we didn't account for monies paid to him last year. If we kept him on the roster, we would still have to account for these charges in the future. So, the cut is about the future.

@OmarKelly So @davehydesports reported he refused to play when Dolphins thought he was healthy enough to play. Unconfirmed but that is only reason that would make sense

Losing cap space to get rid of an offensive guard when you have no GOOD offensive guards on your roster is not exactly wise.
Matt Infante@MattInfante

Per @spotrac, the release of James Daniels actually hurts the Dolphins' cap position unless he's marked as a post-June 1 cut.
