We join the Nation in honoring the peace officers who have devoted their lives to safeguarding our communities and protecting their fellow citizens. On Peace Officers Memorial Day, we remember the fallen officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty and recognize those injured while serving. We also honor those who continue to wear the badge in service to the American people. Photos from the @interior Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony by DOI

As bears begin searching for food after months of winter inactivity, human-bear encounters tend to increase. Many of these encounters can be prevented by taking a few simple precautions: • Give bears plenty of space and never approach them. • Store food, garbage, pet food, grills, and other attractants securely. • Keep campsites and outdoor areas clean. • Make noise while hiking to avoid surprising a bear. • Carry bear spray and know how to use it properly.

Killing our national symbol to sell on the black market? Not on our watch. A Washington man admitted to killing bald and golden eagles on and around the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana and selling their feathers and body parts on the black market, part of an illegal operation that slaughtered thousands of birds.  Since then, a coconspirator in Texas admitted to purchasing those parts and having them shipped to his home. This wasn’t an accidental poaching incident. It was part of an organized, profit driven wildlife crime carried out over years by multiple conspirators. And it was stopped by @USFWS law enforcement and partners, who uncovered the scheme, followed the money, and built the cases that brought these traffickers to justice. This National Police Week, we recognize the law enforcement professionals who protect wildlife and safeguard the public every day. When a 7-year-old boy went missing while paddleboarding near Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, @USFWS Federal Wildlife Officer Tim Ryan didn’t hesitate. He launched his boat, joined up with a @MyFWC Wildlife Officer, and pushed down the Rocky Creek River through fallen trees and tight passages, calling out into the silence. About 50 yards from the riverbank, they heard a voice. They found the boy, gave medical aid, and got him safely back to EMS. This National Police Week, we recognize the officers who show up when every second counts.

They may have four legs, but they’re full members of the team. Our K9s work alongside Federal Wildlife Inspectors and Federal Wildlife Officers to detect illegal wildlife products, track evidence, and support investigations. From ports of entry to national wildlife refuges, these teams help stop wildlife trafficking and support enforcement operations across the country. Let's paws for a moment and recognize the K9s and handlers helping protect our nation every day. #NationalPoliceWeek

They work at ports, at crime scenes, and deep in some of the most remote places in America. @USFWS law enforcement includes Special Agents, Wildlife Inspectors, and Federal Wildlife Officers, along with the analysts, forensics experts, and support staff behind the scenes. They investigate wildlife trafficking. They protect endangered species. They patrol national wildlife refuges and respond when people need help. During National Police Week, we recognize the full team behind the badge and the work they do every day to protect wildlife and the American public.

Buying a Federal Duck Stamp supports one of America's most successful conservation programs. Since 1934, sales have raised over $1.3 billion, conserving more than 6 million acres of wetlands and habitat in the National Wildlife Refuge System. 98% of proceeds go straight to the Migratory Bird Conservation Fund for land purchases and easements that benefit waterfowl, other wildlife, water quality, flood control, and recreation. A current stamp also grants free entry to many refuges with entrance fees. It's a great way for anyone to contribute—even non-hunters!
