But that simple aircraft must have been based on IAF air staff requirements which would then translate to the actual design. Was it an IAF demand to have a Western engine? Or did they only specify engine requirements (thrust, MTBO etc.) and let the design agency pick up the best fit?

I hv no access to files. What u ask is common sense but what happened in the " Gandhi Raj" (1970 to 2014) is opaque. There were unsavoury deals . Why Russian? We hv spent= 2 lakh crores on Tejas, engine, radar. The IAF had wanted a simple aircraft. Who made it science project?
Usman@usman_cph

@prody24445539 After the Pokhran sanctions were there any IAF-ADA discussions on revisiting the engine choice? I have read the earlier literature on the choices but why wasn't there a Russian option as a backup in case of Kaveri failure?

@hyperRoguex That is a FT-7P. The F-7P's are gone and the F-7PG's have very distinctive double-delta wings. Some twin-seat FT-7P's are maintained for conversion.

You will, no doubt, next tell me that a hptr is also easier to design. The Tejas configuration as seleted by the Babus of ADA is a trick configuration that needed experienced designers to see through. The rest since 2001 are all efforts to correct the wrong choice. We were gypped

@prody24445539 Prof. Das , 1) The heart of a flying machine like , A helicopter , aircraft , missile , is the propulsion engine . The size / power in the Dhruv series Helicopter is of the order of 600 - 1000kW . The size of a fighter or , Tejas for example is around 15000 kW ! , a basic diff.

It is based on an opinion piece by Baqar Hassan titled "How the Iran war is rewriting the economics of power … and why Pakistan must read the signals first". That piece refers to a Council on Foreign Relations article from 2025. So this is nothing new. Link: dawn.com/news/1986253

@Island_Thought @xyzrazi @ReviewVayu I’m aware of it and if you look on my profile you can find a photo of him with FM Manekshaw as well. Much of what you are quoting off various sources websites to me, is written by me 😂

@usman_cph @xyzrazi @ReviewVayu AVM ( Rtd ) Amjad Hussain was also shotdown in the 1971 War and spent time as an Indian PoW before he was repatriated when Field Marshal Manekshaw visited Pakistan for talks along with whom he tagged along. Interpretation of events vary depending on who you ask & when...

Gun camera footage of M. M. Alam’s first kill on 6 September. On the way to attack Adampur Air Base, the formation encountered IAF Hunters. Squadron Leader A. K. Rawlley did not survive the engagement. The Beas river is visible in the background. I would be eager to hear from any veterans or their families who might have preserved such footage. It would help enrich future editions of the PAF history book.

The snippet from the Starfighter website (916 Starfighter) you have posted also quotes my work:) I had interviewed AVM (r) Amjad Hussain and his F-104 went through the debris of Devya's Mystère due to high closure rate, damaging his controls and forcing him to eject. There are eyewitnesses that verified the same and Air Cdre Kaiser Tufail's article also covers this in detail.

@Island_Thought @xyzrazi @ReviewVayu Pushpinder Singh wasn't always correct with his facts either. For example in his article on Su-7s "A Whale of a Fighter" he wrote that no Su-7 was lost in air-to-air combat. We know that is not true. In later years, when he visited Pakistan, he also met M M Alam.

@Island_Thought If you are implying that he did not fly because he was Bengali, again that is not true. He was not of Bengali origin (despite uninformed people writing otherwise) and held a senior position during the 71 war.

@ZahidMahmo51433 @prody24445539 We are not good at preserving history. After the 1965 war, the PAF made a training video using all the gun camera footage and distributed it to all squadrons to demonstrate examples of good (and poor) shooting. Unfortunately, no copies of it seem to have survived.

He commanded a squadron during the 1965 war, and people don’t usually remain in the same role for long. He was responsible for the induction of the Mirage after the war and later took on other staff duties. Even if you use Indian acceptance of his claims as the yardstick, he still stands out as the most successful fighter pilot of the subcontinent.

@usman_cph Pertinent question to ask would be: Where was this so called ace during the 1971 Bangladesh war ??? 🤷🏻‍♂️ While his 1965 numbers are not even taken seriously by PAF's own.

@AliNaumanKT @prody24445539 Late Sajad Haider is entitled to his opinion but MM Alam did the right thing. IAF already had CAPs up since Pathankot was struck and other formations were delayed. They wouldn’t have made it to Adampur.

@usman_cph @prody24445539 acc to Sajjad Haider, though the hunters have seen Alam's formation, they didnt attck them but Alam ordered his frmtion to jettison tanks & go in for the kill diverting from his primary objective tht was Amrtsr Radar. What du u think this decision?

It might be in PAF archives, but I don’t have access to those. My dream is for someone at AHQ to grant me access to the archives at rear HQ (Peshawar) so I can go through every photo and reel and get it preserved. The OC No. 14 Sqn had smuggled the gun reels of air combat over Dhaka and handed them to ISPR, which has misplaced them - imagine that.
