A man who carried the weight of an entire people on his shoulders and made the world pronounce “Tamil” with fear, respect and attention. Meanwhile today, our people blindly idolize cinema personalities and forget the ones who sacrificed their lives, future and families for Tamil

Sri Lanka knows exactly who these men are. Soldiers from the 53 Division in 2009. They appear in mobile phone video taken in Isaipriya’s final moments - footage their unit filmed themselves. They should have been arrested. 17 years later, they still walk free.

Today is Isaipriya’s 44th birthday. She was executed aged just 27. An akka killed when she was younger than me. We know which Sri Lankan military unit was responsible. Her killers filmed themselves on mobile phones. Their faces are all clearly visible. 17 years later, no one has been held accountable. One day, justice will be served. வீரவணக்கம் 🪔 ───────── 📷 via @tamilguardian. Courtesy of Pugazhenthi

Sri Lanka, 2009. More civilians killed per day than Syria. More than Libya. More than Darfur. The world stayed silent. 17 years on. We have not forgotten. _____ remembermay2009.com | Graphic: @SLcampaign

In 1998, Sri Lankan army soldiers burned Tamil restaurant owner V. Vijayakumari alive because she was preparing to testify as a witness to a rape committed by soldiers, a crime the army then intentionally covered up as “suicide.”

38 years ago, Indian icon and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Maruthur Gopalan Ramachandran, better known as M.G.R., passed away at the age of 70. MGR holds a huge place in Tamil history due to his movies, in which he constantly spoke about the struggles of the oppressed and the day-to-day hardships faced by ordinary people. His films portrayed battles against corruption and exploitation, showed him as a man who protected the poor, and featured iconic songs that carried strong social messages. On screen, he was the gentleman who protected women, defeated injustice, and preached righteous values, rejecting smoking, drinking, and indecent behavior. He maintained a clean image on screen and lived by the very values he portrayed. During his rule as Chief Minister, MGR fought against child hunger in Tamil Nadu, increased school enrollment, and introduced free uniforms and books. He supported housing for Adivasis and people in rural areas, promoted women’s welfare, and implemented the Midday Meal Scheme, which later inspired similar programs across India. MGR holds a special place in the hearts of Eelam Tamils. He was the only actor to visit all parts of Tamil Eelam and played an important role during a critical development phase of the movement. He was deeply sympathetic to the cause, allowing thousands of Eelam Tamils fleeing genocide to seek refuge in Tamil Nadu and providing them with government relief. He also played a major role in financially supporting the LTTE. MGR believed that, among various resistance groups, the LTTE demonstrated the strongest commitment and passion for the Eelam Tamil cause. This belief led to a close and emotional relationship with Tamil Eelam national leader, Hon. V. Prabhakaran. As Prabhakaran himself said, he was like an elder brother, someone you could always talk to. The LTTE required significant funding to operate independently without relying on India. Whenever financial support was needed, MGR reportedly provided assistance, amounting to as much as 110 million, without expecting anything in return. Even when tensions arose between Eelam Tamils and Indians, an ailing MGR tried his best to find a peaceful solution between the two. MGR will always hold a special place in the Tamil nation. The Tamil nation salutes you on your death anniversary!

Heartbreaking from Nawalapitiya, Kandy. This man’s son & family were swept away in a landslide. He says more people are buried, but they do not have the equipment or support to search for them. Malayagha Tamils are some of the most vulnerable on the island. 📹 @NewsWireLK

Today, on November 27, Maaveerar Naal is observed by Eelam Tamils to commemorate the tens of thousands of Tamil martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the armed struggle. The first Tamil martyr of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) was Lt. Shankar, who succumbed to his wounds in Tamil Nadu. His death was initially kept secret, as it was believed that announcing it might demoralize the Tamil population and give the Sri Lankan government a psychological advantage. In 1989, the first Maaveerar Naal was held secretly in the jungles of Manal Aru. In contrast to traditional Tamil cultural norms, where certain honors are reserved for a select few, LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran wished to create a day on which all the Tamils that attained martyrdom would be collectively remembered. Maaveerar Naal soon became an important and emotional commemorative day for many Eelam Tamils and also acquired political significance, as it was one of the rare occasions on which Prabhakaran delivered speeches outlining the goals of the resistance movement. One of those Tamils that died is Nagendram Karunadevi, also known as Col. Mathana , who died at the tender age of 22 and is regarded as one of the most influential figures among women fighters in the Eastern Province. In recognition of her leadership, a brigade was later named the Mathana Brigade. She was noted for her role in recruitment, training, and organizing units in Batticaloa. This period was marked by hardship, as the Sri Lankan army had taken control of the forests of Mattunagar. Despite lacking basic facilities, Karunadevi remained determined and continued to encourage those around her. Accounts describe her as someone who combined discipline with camaraderie, singing, dancing, and playing sports with fellow members to maintain morale. She encouraged activities such as football, volleyball, cricket, and vattakavadi to help balance the emotional strain of life in the camps.

71 years ago, Hon. Velupillai Prabhakaran was born on the soil of Tamil Eelam. He later became the leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), the vanguard of the Tamil Eelam national struggle. He sacrificed himself, his eldest son Charles Anthony on the battlefield, his wife, his daughter Duwaraka, and his son Balachandran for the struggle. Prabhakaran taught the Indians their biggest lesson, and his name still instills fear in Sri Lankan fascists. The biggest revolutionary of South Asia. „Justice and truth are on our side; this is our strength. Injustice and untruth are on the side of the enemy; that is his weakness. In the end, the victors will be us, because indestructible justice is on our side.“

Eelam Tamil dancer Yamuna Sangarasivam performing classical Odissi alongside Michael Jackson in the iconic 1991 “Black or White” music video. Yamuna Sangarasivam was born in Jaffna, and left her homeland at the age of nine to emigrate to the United States. She is currently a professor of Sociology and Anthropology at Nazareth University in New York and serves as the director of the Women and Gender Studies Program at Nazareth College. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Musicology and Piano from the University of Minnesota in 1990, followed by a master’s degree in Anthropology and Ethnochoreology from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1992. She completed her PhD in Anthropology at Syracuse University in 2000. Yamuna gained international recognition when she was selected from among 3,000 auditioning dancers to perform classical Bharatanatyam alongside Michael Jackson in his 1991 music video Black or White. The duet was filmed on a Los Angeles expressway, which was temporarily closed to traffic to accommodate the stunt drivers and ensure the shoot could proceed safely. The filming lasted nearly 14 hours. In addition to her performance career, Yamuna is also an author. In 2021, she published Nationalism, Terrorism, Patriotism: A Speculative Ethnography of War, a book examining the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and the intersections of war, identity, and culture.
