FACT-CHECK: Did Bola Oyebamiji Possess Only an HND Before Enrolling for a PhD Programme? By Ismail Omipidan CLAIM: Allegations circulating in political discussions claim that the Osun APC Governorship Candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, enrolled for a PhD programme using only a Higher National Diploma (HND), without possessing any additional academic qualifications. Background: The allegation suggests that Oyebamiji’s highest academic qualification prior to his PhD enrolment was an HND, thereby questioning his academic eligibility for doctoral studies. The claim has gained traction amid heightened political activities and public scrutiny of candidates’ credentials. Ordinarily, admission into a PhD programme in Nigerian universities requires possession of at least a relevant Master’s degree. The controversy, therefore, centres on whether Oyebamiji holds qualifications beyond an HND. Verification: To ascertain the veracity of the claim, I reviewed publicly available biographical records, professional profiles, and credential disclosures relating to Bola Oyebamiji. Findings confirm that while Oyebamiji obtained his Ordinary National Diploma (OND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) in Banking and Finance from The Polytechnic, Ibadan, his academic progression did not stop at that level. Further checks reveal that he earned two Master’s degrees, a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from Lagos State University, Ojo, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Ado-Ekiti (now Ekiti State University). In addition to his academic qualifications, Oyebamiji became a member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria in 2009 and is a Fellow of professional bodies including the Institute of Chartered Economists of Nigeria and the Association of Enterprise Risk Management Professionals. His professional career also reflects a longstanding trajectory in the banking sector prior to public service. He began as an Assistant Manager at Wema Bank Plc in 1989, later joined Trans International Bank where he rose to Principal Manager and headed the Lagos Region before exiting in 2003. He subsequently worked at Spring Bank Plc as Head of Business Development and later at Enterprise Bank as Head of the Retail Business Unit. In 2012, he was appointed Managing Director of Osun State Investment Company Limited (OSICOL). There is no evidence supporting the claim that Oyebamiji’s highest academic qualification is limited to an HND. Conclusion: Findings show that Bola Oyebamiji holds two Master’s degrees in addition to his OND and HND qualifications. The claim that he enrolled for a PhD programme with only an HND is inaccurate. Verdict: Misleading - Bola Oyebamiji possesses two Master’s degrees and meets the academic requirement to be a PhD candidate.

Marriage doesn’t stop people from committing zināh. It’s a truth many people don’t like to admit, but marriage alone is not a cure for lust, nor is it a guarantee of righteousness. There are married men and women who still fall into sexual immorality because marriage doesn’t automatically purify the heart, what purify the heat is taqwā (God-consciousness). So if the only reason you’re rushing into marriage (early marriage as we call it) is because you fear committing zināh, you might be entering it for the wrong reason. Marriage is not meant to be an escape from sexual desire; it is meant to be a partnership built on understanding, mercy, and self-discipline. Before seeking marriage as protection, work on the nafs (self). Learn restraint, build character, nurture faith. Because the same person who cannot control their sexual desires before marriage will likely struggle with the same weakness after marriage, but just under a different circumstance. Zināh doesn’t happen because someone is single, it happens because someone is heedless. Likewise, chastity isn’t preserved by marriage alone, it’s preserved by the fear of Allah and the strength of self-control. So yes, marry early if you can, but marry for the right reasons. Marry because you seek companionship, tranquillity, and faith. Marry because you want to build a home that pleases Allah. And while you wait, strive to purify your heart, lower your gaze, and discipline your soul. Because the person who can control himself before marriage will only become stronger in marriage, while the one who cannot will only carry the same weakness into a new chapter. Again, zinah doesn’t happen because you’re single, it happens because you lack discipline. May Allah protect us from the desire of zinah, Amin.

A CALL FOR URGENT INTERVENTION ON THE GROWING COST OF EDUCATION AT OSUN STATE UNIVERSITY Over the past few days, there has been a growing outcry among students of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) regarding the alarming rise in the cost of private hostels around the institution’s campuses. This concern has now been compounded by the recent review of school fees, which many students and parents have described as exorbitant and burdensome. As a leading digital media brand in Osun State, we find it imperative to draw the attention of concerned stakeholders— including the Osun State Government (@Osun_State_Gov, @AAdeleke_01, @AOEgbedun), the university management (@uniosune), the Student Union leadership, parents, and the general public, to these developments that threaten the accessibility and affordability of education for many young people in the State. Education remains the most powerful tool for empowerment, and it should not become a privilege for only a few who can afford it. The recent hike in accommodation costs and tuition fees, if left unchecked, will widen the inequality gap, push several students out of school, and frustrate the efforts of hardworking parents already grappling with harsh economic realities. We therefore call for swift intervention through: 1. A stakeholders’ dialogue involving University management, student representatives, and government officials to find a fair and sustainable solution. 2. Regulation and monitoring of hostel pricing to prevent exploitative rent practices by private owners. 3. Review and reconsideration of the new fee structure, ensuring it aligns with the economic realities of students and their families. 4. Increased State support and partnerships to improve on-campus accommodation and financial aid options for indigent students. We believe that with collective will and genuine commitment, these challenges can be addressed in a manner that upholds equity, inclusivity, and the true essence of public education. Education should be a right, not a luxury.
Let us act now; before hope fades for many of Osun’s bright young minds. Signed: Management

Excerpts from the Friday Sermon Title: “A Clarification on the Ruling of Celebrating (Mawlid)” By Sheikh Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, Imam and Khateeb of Masjid al-Haram • A Muslim is commanded to follow (the Prophet ﷺ) and forbidden from innovations and introducing matters contrary to the religion. Allah said: “O you who believe, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger”. And the Prophet ﷺ said: “Beware of newly invented matters, for every newly invented matter is a bid‘ah, and every bid‘ah is misguidance.” He ﷺ also said: “Whoever lives among you will see many differences, so hold on to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs after me. Hold on to it tightly with your molar teeth. And beware of newly invented matters.” • The righteous predecessors (may Allah have mercy on them) strongly warned against innovations and commanded adherence to the Sunnah and leaving all forms of bid‘ah. Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Follow and do not innovate, for you have been sufficed. Hold fast to the old way, for it is enough for you.” And Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Every innovation is misguidance, even if people see it as good.” • Bid‘ah changes the religion, distorts the truth, and replaces the Sunnah with innovation. It takes root in hearts and spreads among people, weakening their bond with Allah and leading them astray. • Among the most famous innovations is what is done in Rabi‘ al-Awwal in celebrating the birthday of the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet and his companions did not do it, nor did the rightly guided caliphs, nor those who followed them with excellence. • Mawlid celebrations include many violations such as mixing of genders, extravagance, raising voices with singing and poetry, and using frivolous words. • Imam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “If a season is taken as a religious season without basis in the Shariah, like celebrating nights of Rabi‘ al-Awwal which they call ‘the Prophet’s birthday,’ it is an innovation that was never practiced by the pious predecessors. Gathering for the Mawlid contains no religious benefit but rather resembles Christian practices.” • The truth is that Mawlid celebrations today have become gatherings of dancing, eating, unlawful mixing, and invitations to misguidance. People claim to love the Prophet ﷺ while engaging in innovations he never commanded. • True love of the Prophet ﷺ is not by innovating, but by following his Sunnah. Allah said: “Say, if you love Allah, then follow me, Allah will love you and forgive you your sins.” • There is no benefit in innovations; rather, they are misguidance. Whoever calls to them is reviving falsehood and extinguishing the light of the truth. The authentic texts clearly forbid such gatherings, which only open doors of misguidance and ignorance. • Message to the Ummah: Fear Allah regarding yourselves. Abandon these innovations and misguidances. Hold fast to the Sunnah of your Prophet ﷺ. Islam began as something strange, and it will return to being strange, so glad tidings to the strangers.
