@JoshNoLook I mean, magnus was given a forfeit for wearing jeans last year, while in the same tournament multiple other individuals also wore jeans. And other people also scream (ivanchuk) or slam tables at events like these, didn't see them getting penalized.

Chris Bird knows the importance of keeping noise down, so why the double standards when Magnus Carlsen does it? He brushed it off & normalized tantrums, despite being arbiter for the fist slam at #RapidBlitz and the cameraman shove. Double standards.

@turnabouttess Kasparov didn't get the chance to show dominance in other formats and had major advantage in openings compared to his contemporaries in classical. Swimming has a lot more formats than chess and achievements in team sports are harder to compare.

Greg Mustreader@mustreader

Is there any other sport today where the No. 1 dominates as clearly as Magnus does in chess? Even when he’s out of form, it seems no one can stop him.

Tied for 2nd in the World Rapid and unfortunately ended 4th on tiebreaks. I firmly believe that there should be tiebreaks for all medals, I missed out on a medal by .5 of a Buccholz point. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to the blitz!

@DeveshsK_ Keymer, Nodirbek, and Arjun deserve a spot in the candidates a lot more than Wei Yi, Bluebaum and Sindarov. It's not even debetable actually. Classical Rating system beats one totally random tournament (Grand Swiss) and one tournament (Wc) that isn't decided in classical chess.

Emil is on a generational run in having good takes recently to the surprise of many. But seriously, if you want to play the most prestigious tournament of the year, you must be an active player no matter how deserving you may be. Would also add that FIDE always being uncertain about the qualification spots and the format is a bad look. In my view, a rating spot could be the most meritocratic way to choose a candidate, but since the rating system, its rules, and the rules of the "rating spot" itself allow loopholes, the idea sounds inherently bad. Don't mind the removal of the rating spot, but having robust and clear rules and not being fundamentally uncertain in literally everything seems like a better idea overall for FIDE.
Emilchess@EmilSutovsky

"Clearly good enough" is a bad definition to select a player in FIDE Candidates. Unless we return to wild card system in Candidates (not under my watch!), it can't work. "He doesn't really have time for" is more alarming tho. Really? We are talking about qualification to the most important tournament in two years. How come a top pro, who is supposed to qualify by rating that proves he is still a very top pro, does not have time? It is wrong on so many levels. The requirements were actually very modest - and in a hindsight too modest, easy to game. Our fault. But to call a requirement to actually play chess "wild" is wild. Going forwards, I'll submit a proposal, eliminating rating spot altogether towards Candidates-2028. Wolrd Cup, Grand Swiss, FIDE Circuit, and now Total World Championship Tour will be the paths to qualify.

@SurajSSubraman1 Djokovic federer h2h is 27-23. Federer lost 4 matches to Joker after he turned 38 and Joker was in his prime. So yeah... age affected their final h2h score.

@uvesef @chess24com Fake news! The eSports World Cup had a lot of viewers, everybody knows that, it's a huge thing, bigger than ever before. But to say it was more than "any other chess event," and that "it wasn't close"... that's a very low-energy statement. Probably from some low-IQ research. Sad!

@promotedpawns Has he tho? As far as i remember, he only made a very neutral anti-war comment at the very start of the war, and hasn't spoken about it since. He seemed ok to participate in state organized events multiple times also. Which prominent israeli players endorsed the genocide?

@Ruhichess @Maxwell12402371 @hellokostya I never said it was the absolute best, but one of them. Still is better than 14 games. Question, what made the difference between Fabi, Naka, Nepo and Guky in the candidates? Was it their h2h match ups or something else? And that goes for other winners also not just for Gukesh.

@uvesef @Maxwell12402371 @hellokostya But Elo is just predicting who will win. It's like saying that IQ determines who gets the best grades. You may say Elo is the best predictor, but that's also false. You can improve on it quite easily.

Why are people upset over this? Gukesh is not the undisputed best chess player in the world He has every chance to get there, he's one of the most incredible talents in chess history (!), but he hasn't reached there yet.. I believe that's Kasparov's very valid point

@Ruhichess @Maxwell12402371 @hellokostya Elo is historically one of the best systems for calculating the relative skill levels of players in zero-sum games like chess. Of course it has flaws, but i will take over a very flawed qualification cycle and 14 games that is candidates. Universally accepted method vs lottery.

@Maxwell12402371 @hellokostya No, the best is not determined by Elo, because Elo is just a prediction system and it has its flaws. And it is really concerning that people in chess worship it like the word of God. And this delusion is doing serious damage to chess.

@Aman_Singh00025 Karpov was winning every major tournament he played for 10 years from 1975-1985, and he had already reached 2700 by 1974, the first to do so since fischer. And was already dominant before 1975. Gukesh isn't dominant at all, it's not even Magnus fault that he gets shade.

@GMJacobAagaard The problem with people who think freestyle is better chess is that if you ask them : Give me an epic freestyle Match ? They wont have an answer 😂 Meanwhile if you ask any classical fan about epic matches they will give you a 100 match list Freestyle good in the moment only

I hate that there has to be this animosity between alternative chess forms and classical chess. If Freestyle is so great, why do the organisers have to say how boring Classical chess is all the time? I have definitely been guilty of saying it the other way. I shall try to be old in private only going forward...

I love Levy's suggestion. OTB should copy this. Hear me out. Top 3 World Cup, Top 2 Grand Swiss & best performers from each calendar year should play a tournament. Let's call it candidates or something. Winner should challenge Gukesh. Very smart this Levy guy @GothamChess

@chess_insights @GothamChess Comparing Speedchess matches who have a big number of games and 50+ TT events, to the total randomness that is World Cup and Grand Swiss💀 World Cup, Grand Swiss and Candidates are a spin of the wheel events, it is very clear that most times the best players don't emerge.

This is a VERY exciting announcement for chess. For once we have a cohesive schedule where certain events "flow" into others, ultimately culminating with a worthy championship once again in Summer 2026. Imagine OTB chess pulled together something similar? Video coming soon.

@NickMigs @turnabouttess He actually won 2.5 elo points (why lie?lol), but elo has nothing to do with your original argument. He won a classical tournament against those 3 a few months back. All 3 had the chance to prove that they are better classical players than him and failed.

It is hard to make predictions on the future, but some things have a feeling of gravity to them. We have seen how it works for a lifetime, and it is unlikely not to change. I got this prediction right. And until a few days ago, Giri was back in the top 10... Carlsen and Nakamura are of course very strong - but since they are not playing the top events, it is a stupid World Ranking system that keeps them on top. Yes, I am trying to argue Giri into the top 10...
