Seriously, how can left populists keep a straight face when they demand that "the rich" pay their "fair share," when the top 10% already pay 59% of income taxes and the bottom 50% only 3%? In which parallel mental universe do these people live?
Michael A. Arouet@MichaelAArouet

Left populists in the US and elsewhere love screaming "tax the rich." In reality, the top 10% of US earners already pay 59% of income taxes, while the bottom 50% pay only 3%. Are the left ignorant, naive or manipulative? Or is it just pure envy?

@Handre Skewing reality here the top 10% of W2 earners pay all of the taxes. Thats why so many of the tech bro CEO’s take a dollar salary.

Progressive taxation punishes success and rewards failure. In the US, the top 10% already pay 70% of income taxes while the bottom 50% pay 3%. Yet politicians demand the "rich" pay their "fair share." They want to claim an even larger share of high earners' productivity.

@RealKeithWeiner Passed in 1973, the Nixon administration's Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) was designed to curb medical inflation by encouraging growth of managed care. It provided federal subsidies and legitimacy to for-profit HMOs, creating the massive profit-driven healthcare industry.

Socialism seeks out capital, to consume and destroy. Notice that he feels owning a productive enterprise is "hoarding". He just wants to liquidate the business to provide food for a day.
𐌁𐌉Ᏽ 𐌕𐌉𐌌𐌉@OrevaZSN

Never before in history have billionaires existed at this scale. Billionaires hoard wealth that could solve hunger, housing, and healthcare crises; their existence is not a sign of success but of selfishness and systemic failure.

You think the HC companies doing tens and hundreds of billions in revenue, profitably, would go out of business ? I think they would do all they could to force everyone else out of business Who could stop them?
Ange@civilagain

@mcuban Most will go out of business because they don’t have a business model anymore that extracts tax-money and extorts working people . Physicians can go back to starting their own clinics and run them like normal businesses the way they used to. Nobody can scam taxpayers anymore.

You stay competitively priced for normal people. How do all the “not normal” people pay for their care ? And if they can’t pay for their care, how do all the hospitals and doctors stay in business when everyone that is poor can’t pay for their care ? Old people need the most care. And the don’t have much money. Let em get sick, stay sick, and die, so normal people get cheaper insurance ?
Archwinger@Archwinger1

@mcuban Run the numbers. Charge the lowest possible but still profitable amount to undercut competitors. Exclude all preexisting conditions, high risk, and low socioeconomic populations from coverage so I stay competitively priced for normal people

Thanks to Trump and Republicans’ refusal to extend the ACA subsidies, ACA premiums are up 58% this year, leading 5 million Americans to forgo health care coverage altogether. In the richest country in the world, no one should worry about being able to afford a trip to the doctor.

The median home price in the US right now is $432,000. To afford the mortgage and have a little cash left over, not rich, just not drowning, you need to make about $160,000 a year. The median income is $84,000. That means half the country can't afford the median house. These are people: -skipping medical appointments -skipping the dentist -missing a prescription -leaving the dent in the car because they can't afford the repair shop. This isn't abstract monetary policy. This is how people are actually living. Inflation is a regressive tax. It hits hardest the people with the least margin for error. And they are angry — rightfully so.

I’ll never understand why people don’t want to tax billionaires more. They would still be billionaires. You’re not really taking anything from them, just what they’re hoarding. They’ve profited off everyone else, so shouldn’t they give back?

I pay $1,138.00 per month for my wife and I with a $6,000. deductible each, $10,000 max out of pocket per year means we pay $23,000 before insurance kicks in. This is not insurance. It's a rip off.
Mark Cuban@mcuban

Ok. Take government completely out of healthcare. No rules. No laws. No Medicare. No Medicaid. Hospitals, insurance companies, can do anything they want. What do they do ? If you were running any of the biggest insurance companies or hospitals, what would you do differently once gov was completely out of healthcare ?

Building things like spaceships and data centers *is* how great people fix things and make Earth a better place for humans. It’s not dumping money on homeless people, which is an infinite sinkhole that will do nothing to stop homelessness and will actually make it worse.
daz@MetamateDaz

I genuinely don't understand people like Bezos and Musk. If I had billions of dollars, I would just start fixing everything. Homeless veterans sleeping on the streets? Not on my watch. Hungry children going to bed with empty stomachs? Hell no. They could be making life better but instead choose to build spaceships and data centers to pump stocks and destroy the planet

Capitalism is the solution in healthcare. But, there is a reason we have anti-trust laws. There are reasons why we have the @FTC We are at a point in time where the big vertically integrated carriers and providers are abusing their market positions. Neither agency has done shit to stop them over the past decade There is a bill, the Break Up Big Medicine Bill from @HawleyMO and @SenWarren. I have talked to democratic senators who have said they will support it if more republican senators do. They want to match 1 dem to 1 rep. Totally dumb shit. So they say nothing. Other than Josh, not a single republican senator I have talked to has the guts to stand up for it. Period. They won’t give a reason. They just won’t do it. If you want less government in healthcare, it can’t happen until these conglomerates are broken up If you want single payer or M4A , it can’t happen until these conglomerates are broken up Quit bitching and call your senator and tell them to grow a spine and support this bill
MimsyJan@jjonesschenk

This free market BS is ridiculous!! Capitalism (the basis of free market BS) is not the correct solution for social services. EVER! Once a social service system is implemented with a profit motive rather than a people motive, it is lost. Case in point, health insurance.
