Statement of a sweeper to me who had 8 stitches in his head and went through MRI. My name doesn’t matter much. Most of people just called me “sweeper,” “bhangi,” or “cleaner.” Every day, I clean your filth,your streets, your drains, your shops, so you could breathe clean air and walk with pride. But no one ever looked me in the eye. No one asked if I had eaten. No one asked if I was okay. Today, I was beaten. Beaten like garbage, by a shop owner whose naala I desilted. He said I was dirty, that I should finish all the work today. My blood spilled on the road which I had cleaned a bit earlier. And no one stopped him. They watched. Some turned away. Some just kept walking. I was poor. I was voiceless. But I was human. If someone reads this, please don’t let this be just another headline, or worse forgotten. I wanted nothing but dignity, and a little food for my children. I love my children just like all of you. I didn’t choose this life but I was born into it. And to the world that ignored me, may you one day see us, really see us, before we are gone. A silent message for all of us.
